槐軒 郭再謙(1547-1615)은 벼슬길에 나아가지 않고 평생 학문 탐구와 후진 양성에 전념한 선비였다. 스승인 寒岡과 溪東의 실천적 학문을 계승하여 대구지역 제3세대 유학자들에게 다대한 영향을 끼쳤다. 특히, 곽재겸은 한시를 통해 선비로서의 자세와 정신을 가감 없이 표출하였다. 그는 학문이 나아가야 할 방향으로 君子之學을 제시하면서 부귀공명을 추구하는 末學을 철저히 배격하였다. 병환에 시달리면서도 학문을 향한 열정을 놓지 않았던 이유이기도 하다. 괴헌은 같은 학문의 길을 걷고 있는 同學에 대한 각별한 정회를 표출하였다. 자주 만나지 못한 데서 비롯된 그리움과 애틋함을 곡진하게 드러내었다. 이런 간절함은 때로 相思夢으로 나타나기도 하였다. 동학들은 그가 학문을 지속할 수 있는 동지들이었기에 자주 만나지 못하는 현실은 그에게는 감내하기 힘든 일이었다. 여기에 따른 이러저러한 정회를 시로 표출하였다. 괴헌은 소학을 탐독하면서 실천윤리에 주목한 바 있다. 그의 삶에서 충효가 중요한 실천 덕목으로 자리 잡은 이유가 여기에 있다. 그는 스스로 충효를 적극적으로 실천하면서 여러 선비들에게도 충효의 실천을 자주 권면하였다. 괴헌은 선비로서 자신의 책무를 절감하였기에 공명을 추구하지 않고 자신의 분수에 만족하였다. 이 과정에서 閑適의 여유로움을 얻게 되었다. 한적은 存養과 省察의 과정을 거쳐 도달한 경지라 할 수 있다. 학문을 향한 열정, 동학에 대한 정회, 충효의 실천, 안분과 한적의 경지가 바로 괴헌 곽재겸이 지닌 선비정신의 핵심이라 할 수 있다.
This thesis is a study on Kwiheon (槐軒) Kwag jae-kyeom (郭再謙, 1547-1615)’s life and poetry. In particular, this thesis studied aspects and the meaning of Kwiheon Kwag jae-kyeom’s scholar spirit. Kwiheon Kwag jae-kyeom was absorbed in scholarship and teaching throughout his life .He had succeeded teachers-Hankang (寒岡) Jeongku (鄭逑) and Kyedong (溪東) Jeon kyechang(全慶昌)’s practical scholarship. Specifically, he expressed the scholar’s spirit and attitude through poetry. He presented a virtuous gentleman’s scholarship, and denounced wealth and fame, because he had enthusiasm for scholarship. He expressed special emotions, for example longing or affectionate feeling, to fellow scholar. This longing or affectionate feeling sometimes summoned dreams. He concentrated on practical morality through studying Sohak (小學). Loyalty and filial piety was positioned as the practical morality in his life. He practiced loyalty and filial piety and encouraged it in other men. He became keenly aware of the scholar’s duty and was satisfied with his own situation. Therefore, he was calm and composed in life. The calm feeling appeared from self-reflection. In conclusion, Kwiheon Kwag jae-kyeom presented a scholar’s spirit, for example enthusiasm for scholarship, special emotion to fellow scholars, loyalty and filial piety, calm and composed feeling.
