The purpose of this study was to examine the moderating effect of self-encouragement on the relationship between socially prescribed perfectionism(SPP) and the social anxiety of middle school students according to gender. We designed the questionnaires to measure the scales for socially prescribed perfectionism, social anxiety, and self-encouragement for youth and administered them to 348 students at a middle school in South Chungcheong Province. We analyzed the data using a t-test, Pearson’s correlations, and stepwise multiple regression analysis with SPSS 21.0. The results were as follows: First, SPP, social anxiety, and self-encouragement all showed significant correlations. Second, the moderating effect of self-encouragement on the relationship between SPP and social anxiety only exhibited among male students. The results suggested that male middle school students need to develop a counseling program to improve their self-encouragement skills to prevent social anxiety due to SPP. Finally, we discussed the implications and limitations of this study, as well as suggestions for future research.
