"청대소설 「姑妄言」에는 다양한 신분층의 역사인물들이 등장하는데 이들은 군주와의 부적절한 관계의 인물, 군주에게 아첨하거나 또는 잔인하고 음흉한 성격으로 타인을 해한 관료, 권력을 남용하고 전횡을 휘두른 간신, 무능하고 향락에만 빠져 국가사직에 막대한 폐해를 가져온 황제들이다. 이들 역사인물 중 일부는 환생을 통한 방식으로 「姑妄言」속에 등장하는데 그들은 역사적 공과에 근거하여 비판되었고, 환생 후의 묘사에 있어서는 역사적 사실에 기반하여 확장되거나 또는 완전한 허구로 변개되어 생생한 인물로 형상화되었다. 환생을 통하지 않고 직접 등장하는 역사인물 역시 그들의 역사적 사실에 근거하거나 확장되어 묘사되었다. 작가가 이들을 소설 속에서 재현한 의미로는 첫째, 역사인물에 대한 비판과 처벌이다. 역사인물에 대한 미움과 분노를 품고 그들을 작품 속으로 소환하여 마음껏 꾸짖었으며, 제 명에 죽지 못하거나 後孫을 이어가지 못하게 하였고, 역사인물 본인과 그 가족의 난잡한 행위의 집중적인 묘사를 통해 처벌의 의미를 담아냈다. 둘째는 明朝의 멸망에 대한 回顧의 의미를 담아내고 있다. 荒淫無恥의 明末의 황제와 阮大鋮과 馬士英 같은 간신들의 전횡과 부패를 적나라하게 묘사하여 이들에 의해 명나라 패망이 가속화되었음을 비판하고 그곳에서 원인을 찾고 있다. 이들에 대한 묘사는 明朝의 盛衰에 대한 깊은 반성과, 晩明 정권에 대한 회고의 의미를 담고 있다."
"This paper attempts to find out how historical person appearing in 『gu wang yan』 is reproduced and to find out its underlying meanings. Firstly, analysis result of the types of historical person and their description shows that the historical person appearing in 『gu wang wan』could be divided into those who had improper relationship with emperor and empress, those who had flattered emperor or had harmed the others with their cruel and wickedness characteristic, those who had earned the power in an immoral way, disloyal retainer who had fastened up the end of decaying country and the incompetent emperors trapped in all the pleasures that caused the end of a country. These people were reproduced as an animated character by expanding or transforming into a complete fiction based on historical facts. Secondly, novelistic reproduction and its meanings have an intention to express anger against historical person and to criticize and punish them with the author’s logic. The author gave them a retribution by causing an accidental death or severing up their descendents. Furthermore, adultery itself was regarded as a retribution of their wickedness that meanings of punishment is underlied through fictional description of them and their family’s disordered behavior."
