히사오 주란은 뛰어난 창작 기교를 선보이는 작가로, ‘소설의 마술사’라고도 불린다. <신서유기>는 그의 풍부한 저작 중 하나이다. 이 작품의 주인공인 야마구치 치카이는 홀로 티벳 여행길에 오른다. 그는 대자연에 맞서 가혹한 시련을 겪기도 하고, 생명이 걸린 일촉즉발의 상황을 넘기도 하며, 일반인은 상상조차 하기 힘든 놀라운 여정을 완성하게 된다. 이러한 과정으로 미루어 보았을 때, 그의 여정은 단순한 유랑이 아니었다. 기묘한 일들이 포진된여정의 배후에는 상당히 많은 함의가 숨어 있는 것이다. 그 이외에도 본고는카와구치 에카이가 지은 <티벳여행기>의 일부 주요 요소와도 비교, 대조를 하고자 한다. 특히 <신서유기>는 티벳 묘사에 심혈을 기울인 작품이다. 이에 본고는 함의 구조 중 티벳에 대한 서술 방법을 정리하며, 히사오 주란의 전쟁 경험 및 기억에 대해서도 고찰해 보고자 한다.
Hisao Juran is known for his superb writing skills and has been branded as a “magician of novel.” Shin Saiyuki is a representing work among his abundant writings. The protagonist Yamaguchi Tomomi sets off alone to Tibet to bring back the Buddhist scriptures. He goes through tough hurdles and hardships in Mother Nature. He saves his life on close call and accomplishes perilous adventures beyond ordinary imagination. Yet his journeys are not simple trips of drifting. Hidden behind the ingenious elaborations are many allegories. Aside from these investigations, this paper also compares and contrasts essential elements found in Kawaguchi Ekai’s Tibet Ryoko Ki. While Shin Saiyuki spares great efforts in the description of Tibet, its narrative techniques as applied to shaping up Tibet are placed under the rubric of allegorical frame with full intention to probe into the memories of war of Hisao Juran.
