이 논문은 1960-70년대 로스앤젤레스에서 발전한 미술인 ‘피니쉬 페티쉬(Finish Fetish)’와 ‘빛과 공간(Light and Space) 미술’을 재조명하는 시도이다. 1960-70년대 당시 미국의 주류 미술은 미니멀리즘이었고 이는 동부 뉴욕을 중심으로 전개되었다. 이에 따라 서부 로스앤젤레스 미술은 상대적으로 덜 주목받게 되어 비주류 미술로 간주되었다. 심지어 미국 주류 미술계의 평론가들은 당시 로스앤젤레스의 미술을 뉴욕의 미니멀리즘과 비교하여 폄하하기도 했다. 이런 관점은 ‘피니쉬 페티쉬’와 ‘빛과 공간 미술’을 단순히 미니멀리즘의 아류로치부하게 되는 오류를 낳을 수 있고, 이로 인해 ‘피니쉬 페티쉬’와 ‘빛과 공간미술’만의 독자적인 특성이 간과될 수 있다. ‘피니쉬 페티쉬’와 ‘빛과 공간 미술’의 발전은 자동차 산업의 발달과 그에 따른 자동차 개조 문화의 유행, 항공우주 산업의 발전과 플라스틱 산업의 보편화등 당시 로스앤젤레스 지역 특유의 문화, 산업의 발전과 연관되어 있다. 이는모더니스트 회화의 형식적인 측면을 극단으로 추구하면서 나타난 미니멀리즘과는 근본적으로 다른 것이었다. 이러한 배경에 기반하여 발전한 ‘피니쉬 페티쉬’ 와 ‘빛과 공간 미술’은 관람자의 지각 작용을 유발하는 특성을 갖기도 했는데, 최근의 연구들은 이 점을 부각시켜 ‘피니쉬 페티쉬’와 ‘빛과 공간 미술’이 동시대미술에 끼친 영향을 분석했다. 작품에서 관람자의 경험을 중요시하는 동시대미술의 근원을 ‘피니쉬 페티쉬’와 ‘빛과 공간 미술’로 본 것이다. 이처럼1960-70년대에 나타난 ‘피니쉬 페티쉬’와 ‘빛과 공간 미술’의 영향은 동시대미술까지 이어져, 보다 더 새롭고 다양한 방식으로 능동적인 관람자의 역할을 이끌어내고 있다.
This study tries to review on the ‘Finish Fetish’ and the ‘Light and Space’ that is art developed from 1960s to 1970s in Los Angeles. American mainstream art of the time from 1960s to 1970s was Minimalism, and this has been developed in the Eastern US states of New York. Art in Los Angeles received less attention, and thus, was defined as the nonmainstream art. Even main critics in US often diminished the art in Los Angeles by comparing with the Minimalism in New York. The view point of this might cause a mistake of dismissing the ‘Finish Fetish’ and the ‘Light and Space’ as Minimalism lite. Therefore, the distinctive feature of the ‘Finish Fetish’ and the ‘Light and Space’ could be ignored. The development of the ‘Finish Fetish’ and the ‘Light and Space’ is associated with local culture and industry such as the development of motor industry, following car customizing culture, and the development of plastic industry at the time in Los Angeles. These features of the art in Los Angeles was fundamentally different to Minimalism appeared by seeking a formal aspect of Modernist painting. The ‘Finish Fetish’ and the ‘Light and Space’ which is developed by this background often stimulated audiences’ perception. By highlighting this feature, recent studies analyzed the effect of the ‘Finish Fetish’ and the ‘Light and Space’ on the contemporary art. These studies show the root of the contemporary art regarding audiences’ experience is the ‘Finish Fetish’ and the ‘Light and Space.’ Therefore, the effect of the ‘Finish Fetish’ and the ‘Light and Space’ appeared in 1960s to 1970s led to the contemporary art so that it derives an active role of audiences with new and various ways.
