The purpose of the study is to examine changes in the textbooks used in the Korean Language Institute at Yonsei University, the nation's first Korean language institute, by analyzing major textbooks used since 1959. Yonsei University's Korean Language Institute was founded in 1959 and is the first Korean language education institution to be run by Koreans, unlike Korean language education led by missionaries earlier. In this paper, the main textbooks of the Korean Language Institute were analyzed longitudinally, which is meaningful in terms of educational history, and looked at the changes in the content and teaching methods that appeared in the textbooks. The procedure of this study was first to conduct a literature study and then to collect the materials used since 1959. The analysis criteria were then set up based on the preceding research and the analysis was performed to produce the results. The analysis revealed that the main textbooks used so far have been divided into five periods, with the characteristics of the external and internal components of the textbooks and the approaches applied to the development of the textbooks. These findings could be used as a basis for the Korean teaching materials research field in terms of future development or analysis and evaluation of teaching materials.
