이 글은 한무숙의 소설 『역사는 흐른다』를 중심으로 내셔널리즘의 성격과 젠더의식을 살펴보았다. 이 소설에서 작가는 해방 이후 새로운 국가 건설이라는 아젠더를 실현할 수 있는 내셔널리즘을 구축하려고 했다. 이 시기 아젠더는 좌우익의 이념 극복, 식민지와 전통사회의 잔재 청산, 경제 활성화라는 당면과제의 해결이 핵심 쟁점이었다. 『역사는 흐른다』는 이 문제를 3.1절 기념식을 통해 재현하면서 내셔널리즘의 이상을 제시한다. 친일/국민의 구별은 식민지 잔재 청산과 좌우익의 이념 극복의 문제와 연관된 문제이기 때문에, 유연하면서도 합리적이어야 한다는 입장을 취한다. 그래서 적극적인 친일 협력자마저 국민으로 수용하는 남한 정부나 수동적 협력자마저 국민에서 배제하는 38선 이북의 정권에 대해 비판적 거리를 유지한다. 이러한 전제 하에서, 『역사는 흐른다』는 탈이념적 민족 공동체를 형성할 수 있는 내셔널리즘의 사회원리를 모색하는데, 이를 전통적 사회에서 소환하지는 않는다. 민족의 역사는 신분과 성별에 의해 세밀하게 위계화된 전통적 제도와 규범에 의해 유지되고 있으나, 그 제도와 규범은 사회의 질서와 민족 공동체를 규합하는 힘이 아니라 분열시키는 요인이 되기 때문이다. 그러므로 자본주의 발전 이데올로기와 근대적 합리주의에 의해 구축된 능력주의 사회에서 새로운 국가를 지탱할 수 있는 내셔널리즘의 사회원리를 모색하게 된다. 능력만 갖추었다면 신분이나 성별과 관계없이 사회적 성공도 하고 정치적 주체로도 활동할 수 있는 사회를 소망한 것이다. 그런데『역사는 흐른다』는 능력주의 사회로의 지나친 편향성을 노정하며 가부장적 이데올로기에 기반한 현모양처를 근대적 여성상이라는 환상을 구현한다. 또한 여성의 주체성을 주장하면서도 여성의 성적 자기결정권을 내셔널리즘의 경계 밖으로 추방하는 한계 역시 노출한다.
This article examines the relationship between the characteristics of Nationalism and gender consciousness, focusing on Han Mu-suk's novel, And So Flows History. In this novel, a writer tried to build the Nationalism that could realize the agenda of the construction of the new state after liberation. The agenda of the construction of a new state was the key issue to overcome the challenges of overcoming ideology of the left and right, solving the remnants of the colonies and the traditional society, and revitalizing the economy. And So Flows History reproduces this problem through the ceremony of 3.1 movement, and reproduces the ideal of Nationalism. The distinction between pro-Japanese/Nation(國民) is a problem related to the settlement of colonial residues and the overcoming of ideologies of the right and the left, so it should be flexible and rational. So this novel is critical of the South Korean government, which accepts aggressive pro-Japanese collaborators as Nation(國民), and the regime of the north of the 38th line, even excluding passive cooperators from Nation(國民). Under these assumptions, And So Flows History seeks the social principles of Nationalism that can form a de-ideological national community and does not summon it in traditional society. Although the history of the nation(民族) is maintained by the traditional systems and norms that are closely hierarchized by the status and the gender, its system and norms are the forces that not unit the society and the national community, but divide them. Therefore, it seeks the social principles of Nationalism that can support the new state in the competent society established by capitalistic development ideology and modern rationalism. In this novel, if people were capable, they hoped for a society that could succeed both as a person regardless of status or gender, and act as a political subject. However, And So Flows History shows an excessive bias toward a competence society and embodies the fantasy that modern women's image is a Wise mother and good wife based on patriarchal ideology. In addition, it claims the subjectivity of women, but exposes women's sexual self-determination to the limits of expelling them from the boundaries of Nationalism.
