본 논문은 하이데거의 근대철학에 대한 평가와 그 비판을 다룬다. 이를 위해 우리는 하이데거의 데카르트 해석을 살펴보며, 특별히 데카르트의 ‘코기토(COGITO)’ 논의와 프로타고라스의 언명, ‘인간은 만물의 척도이다’의 차이로부터 근대철학의 본질과 현대위기의 근거를 제시하고 그 극복의 단초를 찾게 된다. 하이데거가 지적한 현대 위기의 요인은 근대로부터 출발한 주체중심주의이다. 그리고 이것은 결국 모든 존재자와 생명을 도구화, 재료화(원료, 부품)하는 방식으로의 변형을 이끌게 된다. 하이데거는 이러한 현상이 데카르트의 코기토를 통해 나타난 현대존재론의 한계라는 사실을 이야기함과 동시에 그것의 극복단초를 프로타고라스의 ‘인간은 만물의 척도’라는 언명으로부터 찾아낸다. 프로타고라스의 언명은 데카르트의 코기토와 유사한 형태를 가지고 있지만, 이와 반대로 그 둘은 결코 단순한 유사성 안에 함께 머물지 않는다. 프로타고라스는 모든 것을 가늠하고 판단하는 기준으로 설 수 밖에 없는 인간의 모습을 데카르트와 더불어 긍정하는 듯하지만, 이와 반대로 그는 결코 데카르트적인 자기절대화의 길로 가지 않는다. 오히려 그는 자신을 넘어선 다른 영역 안에서 가늠의 척도를 찾아야 함을 분명히 한다. 그리고 이것은 결국 자기 자신의 유한성의 통찰을 의미하며, 그럼으로써 자기 자신이 언제나 다른 존재자와 생명들에 빚지고 있음을 인정하는 것에 이르게 된다. 인간은 다른 이들의 희생에 의해서만 살아갈 수 있는 자일 뿐, 결코 스스로가 절대적 중심이 되어 다른 존재자와 생명들을 변형시키고 사용할 권리를 가지지 못한다. 오히려 우리는 죽을 수밖에 없고, 유한하기에 결코 그 어떤 것도 우리 마음대로 변형하고 사용할 능력을 지니고 있지 않다. 우리의 삶과 존재는 무엇인가를 도구와 재료로 사용하여 스스로를 유지하는 것이 아니라, 다른 존재자와 생명들의 희생에 의해서 선물되고 있는 것에 불과하다.
This article deals with Heidegger’s evaluation about modern philosophy and its critique. For this, we examine Heidegger’s interpretation of Descartes and suggest the essence of modern philosophy as the basis of the modern crisis from the difference between Descartes’ COGITO and Protagoras’ statement; “human being is the measure of all things.” Heidegger pointed out that the factor of the modern crisis is the subject-centrism which started from the modern age. And this eventually leads to a transformation in the way that all beings and life are instrumented and materialized (raw materials). Heidegger tells the fact that this phenomenon is the limit of modern ontology which appeared through Descartes’ COGITO, and at the same time finds out the Clue for it’s Overcoming from Protagoras’ declaration; “human being is the measure of all things.” Human is one who can live only by the sacrifice of others, but he is never the center of self and has no right to transform and use other beings and lives. Rather, we have to accept our own finite, we have never the power to transform and use anything at our disposal. Our lives and beings are merely being presented by the sacrifice of other beings and lives.
