원불교는 과연 불교인가, 아니면 독자적인 종교인가? 원불교의 정체성에 직접 관련되나 오랫동안 해소되지 않고 있는 원불교의 불교의 관계를 다시 거론하고 그 답을 찾고자 하는 것이 본고의 목적이다. 결론적으로 말하자면 본고에서는 원불교가 불교, 특히 ‘대승불교의 완성’을 지향하는 불교라는 시각에서 원불교의 정체성을 다시 확인해 가고자 한다. 원불교 내부적으로 많은 구성원들이 원불교의 독자적인 교단으로서의 정체성, 곧 독립된 종교의방향을 주장하고 있는데 대해, 논자는 오히려 원불교의 불교적 정체성 회복을 강조하는 것이며, 원불교가 소태산의 본래정신으로 돌아갈 것을 촉구하려는 목적에서 본고를 작성하는 것이다. 이를 위해 주목한 것이 원불교의 교조 소태산대종사의 ‘정법회상’이다. 이는 기존의 원불교와 불교의 관계에 대해 주목한 논고들 대다수가 원불교의 교리적인 면, 제도적인 면, 또는 사회환경적⋅정치적 관계 속에서 원불교와 불교의 관계에 주목한 것에 대해, 본고는 소태산이 제시하고 있는 ‘정법회상’이라는 세계관의 측면에서 원불교의 불교적 의미에 대해 고찰해 보고자 하는 것이다.
Won-buddhism is really Buddhism or a New religion? The purpose of this paper is to discuss the relationship between Won-buddhism and Buddhism, which has not been solved for a long time, and to seek its answer. The result of this paper is to reconfirm the identity of Won-buddhism in the perspective of Buddhism, especially ‘completion of Mahayana Buddhism’-oriented Buddhism. While most people in Won-buddhism argue identity of Won-buddhism as a religious organization, that is the direction of an intact religion, I aim to urge Won-buddhism to return Sotaesan’s original spirit, emphasizing that Won-buddhism will regain Buddhistic identity. For this, ‘Dharma Assembly’ of Sotaesan(1891-1943), both a great religions teacher(大宗師) and the founder of Won-buddhism, should come into the spotlight. While previous researches have been mostly focused on the relationship between Won-buddhism and Buddhism in perspective of doctrine and system of Won-buddhism or social environment⋅political relationship, this paper will consider Buddhistic meaning of Won-buddhism in the perspective of ‘Dharma Assembly’s world view, which was suggested by Sotaesan.
