This research explores the effects of theatre participation in enhancing community consciousness via drama. Furthermore, the study explores the ways in which theatre in educational settings provides an optimum environment for quality learning to occur by instigating motivation for the members of the community. The research was conducted in a Christian international school in Nairobi, Kenya. Theatre is an apt medium because it incorporates aspects of music, dancing, singing and creativity that Kenyans have originally used within their form of education. Also, a Christian international school is unique in upholding a distinct Christian emphasis on community. The Christian emphasis on community can provide students with a holistic, well-rounded and value-based education. Participant observation, the individual’s participation reflection, and group interviews have been utilized. Qualitative results reveal that theatre participation has had positive influences on increasing some aspects of community consciousness. This study sets forth positive effects of theatre across educational settings.
