영화 <모나리자 스마일>은 여대생을 대상으로 하는 여성학과 사고와 표현교육의 콘텐츠로서 주목해 볼 여지가 있다. 영화는 고정된 성역할에 따라 학생들에게‘현모양처’ 이데올로기를 주입하는 보수적 분위기가 지배적이었던 1950년대 여자대학 상황을 보여주고 있다. 결혼시장에서 가치를 높이기 위해 대학교육을 받던시대에 좋은 가문의 남성과 결혼해서 가정을 꾸리는 것이 목표인 캠퍼스 분위기를 비판적으로 그리고 있다. 주체적이고 독립적으로 사고하고 스스로의 삶을 살라고 강조하는 진보적인 여자교수가 부임하면서 빚어진 학생들과의 갈등과 새로운 변화의 양상을 흥미롭게 다루고 있는 영화다. <모나리자 스마일>은 여성과 교육, 결혼과 일의 선택, 주체적인 개인으로서의자아발견, 여자대학의 존재 이유 등 젠더적 관점을 갖고 사회문화적 맥락에서 생각해 볼 다양한 주제들을 던져준다. 또한 학생들의 사고와 표현능력을 키우는 대학교양교육의 측면에서도 시사하는 바가 많다. 학생들에게 지식을 전달하는 주입식 교육이 아니라 각자가 느낀 바를 말하도록 하고, 토론과 글쓰기로 자신의 생각을 표현하며, 대화와 소통을 통한 교육으로 학생들의 학습동기를 유발했던 교수방법이 그것이다. 즉 영화 <모나리자 스마일>은 가부장제 문화에 여대생들의삶이 예속되어 있음을 비판적으로 사고하게 하고, 학생들이 주체적으로 성장하도록 다양한 교육적 시도를 하는 교수자의 모습을 통해 풍부한 논의거리를 제공하고 있다. 특히 ‘탈 코르셋’을 외치고 있는 한국 사회 현실을 고려할 때, 여대생을대상으로 하는 여성학과 사고와 표현교육 콘텐츠로서 <모나리자 스마일> 텍스트의 내용분석은 영화 밖 세상과 연계하여 주목해 볼 가치가 있다.
We need to take note of the movie “Mona Lisa Smile” as contents of thinking and expression education and Women’s study towards female university students. In this movie, we could critically examine prevailing conservative culture of infusing “as a fixed role of good wife and wise mother” ideology to, then students of women’s university in 1950. In the era when study in the university became a tool for marriage, and under the school environment of which the marriage with a guy in good family became enviable, this movie dealt with conflicts and changes between students and a female professor who instructed independent and autonomous life to them. Through the movie “Mona Lisa Smile”, from the gender perspective as well as social context, we can analyze issues like women and education, the matter of marriage and work, woman’s identity and self-discovery, and the reason for the existence of women’s university. In addition, the movie offers considerable points from the aspect of university’s liberal arts education which cultivates students’ thinking and expression abilities. Not by infusing knowledges to students but by awakening students’ individual feeling and thinking, the teaching method which tried to motivate students through debates, writings, and dialogues and communication offers important educational implications to thinking and expression education. In this way, the movie “Mona Lisa Smile” offers a chance for us to critically examine women’s subordinate life to patriarchal culture, and is a good text for a professor who tries various educational attempts for students, giving abundant food for thought linked with the reality of outside of movie. Especially when I consider the real situation proclaiming “Corset-Free movement”, the movie “Mona Lisa Smile” is more meaningful as contents of thinking and expression education and Women’s study towards female university students.
