이 글은 제주도 고문서 가운데 하나인 「康熙拾參年甲寅正月拾參日各子息亦中都許與明文」(1674)을 활자로 옮기고, 거기에 나타나는 吏讀와 제주 지명 표기를 解讀한 것이다. 이 都許與明文은 吏讀文으로 되어 있다. 吏讀文 안에는 고유 지명을 한자차용표기로 썼는데, 이 표기를 제대로 해독해야 都許與明文을 온전하게 해석할 수 있다. 제주 지방이 아닌, 다른 지역 이두문에서 확인되는 않는 付只와 浮只가 확인되는데, 付只는 ‘부찌기’의 표기이고, 浮只는 ‘떼기’의 표기이다. 이 明文에는 20여 개의 제주 고유 지명이 한자차용표기로 쓰였는데, 열다섯 개 정도는 비교적 온전하게 해독할 수 있다. 그러나 대여섯 개는 본디 소리가 확실하지 않아서 제대로 구명하지 못했다. 이것들도 제대로 해독해내야 이 明文을 온전하게 해독해낼 수 있게 된다. 文頭水는 ‘문두물’, 廣分川은 ‘넙은내’, 立乭巨伊는 ‘션돌거리>선돌거리’의 한자차용표기이다. 제대로 해독하지 못한 표기를 제대로 해독하기 위해서는 민간에 전하는 지명을 제대로 조사해서, 온전하게 기록하고, 제대로 설명해주는 것이 필요하다. 洞川洞은 ‘동냇골’의 표기인지, ‘골냇골’의 표기인지 확실하지 않고, 末應加里員는 ‘망더리’의 표기인지, ‘멍더리’의 표기인지 확실하지 않다.
