이 글은 경남 산청군의 읍면별 법정리 이름이 어떤 의미소로 이루어져 있는지를 살펴보는 데 그 목적이 있다. 산청군의 산청은 ‘지품천-산음-산청’으로 지명 변개가 되었다. 산청군의 행정조직은 1개 읍, 10개 면, 119개 법정리로 구성되어 있다. 전부지명소(前部地名素)를 분류하는 방법은 다양하다. 이 글에서는 전부지명소를 크게 4부분으로 나누었다. 행정 구역명, 자연물, 인공물, 기타가 그것이다. 이들은 다시 여러 개의 하위 지명요소로 나눈다. 산청군 법정리 119개 중에서 행정 구역명을 가진 법정리 개수는 모두 2개로 1.68%, 자연물은 87개로 73.11%, 인공물은 24개로 20.17%, 기타는 6개로 5.04%를 차지하여 자연물이 가장 높은 비율을 차지하였다. 자연물 중에서는 방위가 19개로 가장 많았으며 그 뒤는 식물(12), 들(9), 산/봉우리/고개(9) 등의 순이었다. 인공물로서 고빈도를 보인 지명소는 고적(7), 사람(4) 등이었다.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate what front morphemes of place names the legal districts in Sancheong-gun have. Sancheong-gun's name was Jipumcheon-hyeon during the county, and it was renamed Saneum-hyeon during the reign of King Gyeongdeok of Silla (764). The place names have been changed to Jipumcheon, Saneum, and Sancheong. There are 1 Eup, 10 Myeons, and 119 Legal Districts in Sancheong-gun. The ways to classify the front morphemes of place names are various. They are classified into the administrative area names, the physical place names, the social place names, and the others, on the basis of classification by the Hangeul Society. These are subdivided into the separate morphemes of place names. The front morphemes of the place names of 110 legal districts in Sancheong-gun show 2 administrative area names(1.68%), 87 physical place names(73.11%), 24 social place names (20.17%), and 6 others(5.04%). There are 19 direction names, 12 plant names, 9 mountain names, 9 field names, 6 river names and others, according to the subdivision of the separate morphemes of place names. The places of high difficulty as a public product were places of historical background (7) and people/heard (4). This study of the names of legal districts has a significant meaning, and it is believed to be helpful for further studies.
