江原道 橫城郡 講林面에 있었던 覺林寺는 현재 그 터만 남아있지만, 출토되는 瓦片 등을 통해 통일신라시대부터 있었던 것으로 파악되고 있다. 각림사는 고려 말에 황폐해져 있었으나 李成桂의 측근이었던 神照가 머물기도 하였고, 이성계의 다섯째 아들이었던 李芳遠이 13세의 나이에 각림사에서 공부하였다. 태종 시기에 각림사는 重創과 再重創이 이루어졌는데, 이것은 태종의 지원 아래 이루어진 것이다. 태종은 각림사의 住持들과 특별한 관계를 맺고 있었고, 각림사의 중창에 많은 지원을 하였다. 이에 각림사는 1412년(태종 13)에 중창하여 落成하였다. 또한 태종은 횡성 지역에서 講武를 실시하면서 특별히 각림사에 행차하기도 하였다. 특히 태종은 각림사의 재중창에 역시 많은 지원을 하였는데, 강무를 겸해 각림사에 재차 방문을 하였다. 그리고 각림사에 방문해서는 각림사가 중창되면 落成 法會를 열어줄 것을 약속하였다. 마침내 1417년(태종 17) 각림사의 재중창이 이루어졌고, 태종의 약속대로 성대한 낙성 법회가 개최되었다. 태종은 각림사의 낙성 법회에 卞季良을 보내어 각림사 중건을 축하하고 왕실의 복됨과 세상의 태평 및 안정을 소원하였다. 이렇듯 각림사의 중창 및 재중창은 태종의 지원, 즉 국가와 왕실의 지원 아래 이루어졌는데 이것은 태종이 어렸을 때 각림사에서 修學한 것에 기인하였다.
The site of Gaklimsa temple(覺林寺) that had existed in Ganglim-myeon, Hoengseong-gun, Gangwon-do is extant. It is assumed through excavated roof tile fragment that Gaklimsa temple had existed from the Unified Silla dynasty. Gaklimsa temple was in disrepair in the end of Goryeo. But Shinjo(神照) close to Lee Seong-gye(李成桂) had ever sojourned there. Lee Bang-won(李芳遠), the fifth son of Lee Seong-gye studied at the temple in 13 years old. In the reign of Taejong, Gaklimsa temple was reconstructed and re-reconstructed under support from Taejong. Taejong had a special relationship with chief monks at the temple. Gaklimsa temple was reconstructed and completed in 1412. Taejong executed military training in Hoengseong and specially paid a visit to Gaklimsa temple. Especially, Taejong gave much support for reconstruction of Gaklimsa temple. He visited the temple again, partly for military training. Then he also promised to let Buddhist assembly to celebrate completion of reconstruction be held when the work to rebuild the temple will be completed. At last Gaklimsa temple was reconstructed in 1417. As Taejong promised, magnificent Buddhist assembly to celebrate completion of reconstruction was held. Taejong sent Byeon Gye-rang(卞季良) to cerebrate completion of reconstruction. Taejong also wished good fortune of royal family, peaceful and stable world. Thus, reconstruction and re-reconstruction of Gaklimsa temple was made under support from Taejong, that is, support from nation and royal court. This was possible because Taejong studied there in his younger times.
