한국의 고령사회는 그 속도나 파괴력에서 ‘초고속 압축’의 양상으로 진행된 근대화 과정만큼이나 가파르면서도 빠르게 진행되고 있다. 저출산과 더불어 본격적인 국면으로 접어들고 있는 고령사회는 이대로 진행될 경우 한국사회의 근간을 위협할 정도로 심각한 문제들을 낳을 것으로 보인다. 실제로 그러한 징후나 증상들은사회 곳곳에서 감지되거나 예견되고 있다. 이 글이 최일남의 아주 느린 시간에주목하고자 했던 배경도 그러한 맥락에서이다. 이 글은 최일남의 소설 지형에서 노년의 문제를 본격적인 서사의 화두로 동원하고 있는 6편의 작품들을 분석 대상으로 동원하고 있다. 그 분석을 통해 이 글은성숙한 노년에 대한 성찰을 탐색하고 천착해보고자 하는 문제의식과 목적을 가지고서 출발하였다. 아주 느린 시간에 수록된, 노년을 소재로 한 작품들을 통해 최일남이 드러내고자 했던 문제의식의 핵심은 성숙한 노년이란 무엇인가?라는 화두이다. 그 화두에 대한 성찰과 관련하여 최일남은 성숙한 노년의 조건으로 세 가지를 제시하고 있다. 첫째, 노년이 되어서도 품격과 자존을 잃지 않도록 노력하라는 것 둘째, 세속의 욕망이나 집착에서 벗어나 질서 있는 후퇴를 준비하라는 것 셋째, 언젠가는 반드시 자신을 찾아올 죽음을, 자신의 생을 완성하게 하는 반가운 손님으로 편안하게 맞이하도록 준비하라는 것이다. ‘성숙한 노년이란 무엇인가’라는 화두와 관련된 문제의식의 핵심은 최일남이 ‘노을지경’으로 규정한 절묘한 메타포에 압축되어 있다. 최일남은 이 메타포를 통해, 이 세상에 태어나서 때에 맞는 직분과 도리를 다하다가 나이들어 병들고 죽어가는 생로병사의 과정을 생의 완성으로 평온하게 받아들이는 것이 인생의 순리라는 문제의식을 반영하고 있다.
The rapidity and destructivity of ageing society in Korea hasbeen aggravated as rapidly as the process of Korean modernizationwhich was made in aspect of ‘super-high compression’. Along withthe low fertility, aging population which is worsening, at this rate,seems to cause serious problems that can threaten the backbone ofKorean society. In reality, such symptoms and indication are noticedor foreseen throughout the society. This paper starts from awarenessof the problem, which makes it focus on the work The Very SlowTime of Choi, Il-nam. This paper uses Choi, Il-nam’s six works dealing with a matterof old age as subjects of analysis. Through the analysis, this paperaims to introspect and seek for desirable and mature old age. Withthe summary about the outcome of the discussion, the conclusion ismade as follows. The gist of the critical mind that Choi, Il-nam intended to revealthrough his works based on old age, in The Very Slow Time, isthe subject: “What is mature old age?” In regard to reflection on thesubject, Choi, Il-nam suggests three points as requirements for matureold age. First, unceasing efforts are needed not to lose dignity andaugustness. Second, preparation for orderly retreat out of earthlyambition and obsession is required. Third, be ready to embraceinevitable visit of death to our life, so as to greet it comfortably asa welcome guest who enables the life to be completed. The gist of the critical mind related to the subject: “What ismature old age?” is exquisitely compressed into the metaphor whichChoi, Il-nam regulated as ‘Sunset in Border’. Through the metaphor,Choi, Il-nam reflects his critical mind about the flow of life: Bornin the world, people should be faithful to their timely duties andcomposedly embrace the four stages of life, which are aging,getting sick and being nigh death, as the completion of life.
