이 논문은 이중환의 생애를 재조명하였다. 그는 『택리지』의 저자이자 18세기 전기의 뛰어난 시인이다. 그러나 문집을 비롯한 관련 자료가 드물어 생애와 문학과 학문의 세계가 충분히 밝혀지지 않았다. 이에 흩어진 자료를 전면적으로 수집하였고, 간찰을 비롯한 새로운 자료를 발굴하였다. 그 자료를 분석하여 가계와 인맥, 주요한 활동과 사건을 새롭게 밝혀냈다. 특히, 그동안 거의 논의되지 않았던 그의 문학에 관심을 기울여, 전해오는 작품과 그에 관한 타인의 작품을 조사하여 白蓮詩社 활동과 작품세계를 조명하였다. 이어서 經世學의 관점에서 학문 경향을 분석하여 『택리지』를 저술하게 된 동기를 찾아보았다. 논의를 통해 이중환의 생애와 문학과 학문을 더 깊이 이해하는 데 도움을 주고자 하였다.
This paper revisited the life of Yi Chung-hwan. While Yi is well known as the author of Taekriji and as a talented poet in the early eighteenth century, not many studies have focused on his life as well as his literary and academic world, due to the lack of a collection of his works and research materials. For this paper, this researcher thus collected the dispersed materials and excavated new materials, including the letters written by Yi. This study analyzed the collected materials and newly found information on Yi’s family tree, personal connections, and major activities and events in his life. This study, in particular, focused on Yi’s literary works, which have rarely been discussed so far, and investigated the existing works by Yi and the works of other writers on Yi’s work to shed light on his activities as a member of the Baekryeon Poetry Society (白蓮詩社) and his works. Moreover, this study identified Yi Chung-hwan’s motive of writing Taekriji by analyzing his academic tendencies with respect to the study of statecraft. This study was conducted to deepen the understanding of Yi Chung-hwan’s life, and literary and academic works.
