조수삼의 「동리선생전」에는 두 층위의 슬픔과 연민이 표면에 드러나지 않은 채 중층적으로 얽혀 있다. 독서의 과정에서 그것을 꼼꼼히 읽어내야 「동리선생전」 전체의 주제와 의미를 알 수 있다. 그것은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 중심인물인 정윤을 통해 드러나는 슬픔과 연민이다. 정윤은 10대에 가사(家事) 주관하는 어머니를 잃고 가난해서 결혼도 하지 못한 채 ‘은거(隱居)’하는 아버지 정희교를 모신다. 그는 여성이 하는 모든 일을 직접 하며 아버지를 모시느라 아버지보다 더 늙어 보이고, 그 아버지가 80대 중반에 죽고 자신도 70대의 늙은이가 될 때까지 아버지의 삶을 지탱한다. 정윤의 삶은 ‘효(孝)’로 귀결되지만, 「동리선생전」은 효를 칭찬하기 위해 쓰이는 전(傳)들과는 다르다. 전의 중심인물인 정윤이 주도적이고 자발적으로 효를 실행한다기보다 아버지 정희교가 적극적으로 ‘은거’의 욕망을 실현해 가는 과정 속에서 정윤의 효가 파생되는 것으로 보이기 때문이다. 그 60여 년의 세월 동안 아버지의 ‘은거’의 욕망을 실현해주기 위해 견딘 정윤의 고통 속에서 슬픔이 드러난다. 둘째, 아버지 정희교를 통해 드러나는 슬픔과 연민이다. 정희교는 대대로 집안에 내려오는 천여 권의 책으로 ‘독서’하며 속리산 근처에서 ‘농사’ 지으며 ‘은거’하는 삶을 선택한다. 그런데 그가 독서하고 농사짓는 사이 고을 젊은이들에게 가르치는 글은 ‘논책(論策)’이고 ‘시부(詩賦)’이다. 논책과 시부는 조선시대 과거시험 가운데 대과(大科-文科)의 상급 시험 과목이고, 과거시험은 조선조 지식인이 출세할 수 있는 가장 확실하고 빠른 제도이다. 그의 ‘독서’는 ‘은거’가 아니라 ‘은거’를 버리고 세상으로 통하기 위한 방식으로 보인다. 더구나 대과는 정희교가 속한 통역관의 계급에서는 치를 수 없는 시험이다. 그의 ‘은거’와 ‘독서는 참으로 모순된다. 정희교의 슬픔은 이렇듯 현실-세상에서 이룰 수 없는 꿈을 꾸는 ‘은거’에서 발생한다.
Two layers sorrow is overlapped in The 「Dongniseonsaengjeon」 written by Jo Susam. First, The sorrow revealed by Jeong Yun, the main character. He lost mother, who manage household affairs in his teens. He was so poor that couldn't get married and even take care of Jeong Huigyo that his father living as hermit. Jeong Yun looks older than his father due to manage household affairs by himself. His father dies in the mid 80s and Jeong Yun support his father’s life until he became a 70-years oldman himself. The life of Jeong Yun is concluded as filial duty, But 「Dongniseonsaengjeon」 is different with other stories, which complimented the filial duty. Jeong Yun, the main character carry out filial duty not actively and voluntary by himself but derived from during the process that Jeong Huigyo, his father realize the desire of hermit. The sorrow come out from Jeong Yun’s pain, which ensure about 60-years to realize his father’s desire. Second, The sorrow revealed by Jeong Huigyo, the father. Jeonghyo has chosen to live like a hermit by reading with a thousand books, which a family heritage and farming near Songni Mountain. However he teaches young people, who live in the village the Nonchaek and the Sibu, while he read and farming. Gwageo test is most obvious and fast system to Joseon Intellectuals for succeed. furthermore Nonchaek and Sibu are the subjects of advanced course in Daegwa of Gwageo in Joseon dynasty. Thus, His reading appears to be a way to abandon life of hermit and go through to the world. Moreover, The Daegwa can not be taken to the class of interpreter like Jeong Huigyo. His life as a hermit and the reading are so contradictory. So, Jeong Huigyo’s grief occurs from his life as a hermit, which dreaming that couldn’t be achieve in the world. In 「Dongniseonsaengjeon」, these two layers sorrow became interlaced with multistructure not revealed with external. The overall theme and meaning of 「Dongniseonsaengjeon」 can be known by read off precisely the sorrow of two layers while reading.
