Previous literature observes that non-native speakers of English face problems in the use of phrasal verbs. Thus, they have a tendency to avoid the use of phrasal verbs. This study compares avoidance of phrasal verbs in Korean EFL learners of English with avoidance phenomenon in German EFL speakers. Korean is one of non-Germanic languages which do not phrasal structures in their L1 and German is one of Germanic languages which have similar prefix verb constructions in their mother tongue. This study has three research purposes: (1) to examine whether there is avoidance in Korean EFL students and German speakers of English by comparing native speakers as a control group, (2) to investigate factors which cause avoidance of phrasal verbs in Korean and German groups, and (3) to explore on what types of phrasal verbs does priming have an effect. The results revealed that native speakers of English, Korean EFL learners and German speakers of English preferred one-word verbs in the same figurative phrasal verbs and German learners of English showed more avoidance of literal types of phrasal verbs than figurative ones. This study suggests pedagogical implications in teaching phrasal verbs in terms of cognitive perspectives.
