많은 사람들은 원산부흥은 일반부흥으로 평양부흥은 대부흥으로 인식하고 있다. 아울러 1907년에 있었던 평양대부흥은 1904년부터 시작된 영국웨일즈의 부흥이 1905년에 인도 카시아 힐 지역의 인도부흥(1905-1906)으로 이어졌고, 그것이 1907년 평양대부흥으로 연결된다고 믿는 사람들도 있다. 하지만 평양대부흥은 외국 부흥의 영향을 직접적으로 받았다기 보다는원산대부흥의 영향하에 이루어졌다고 보는 것이 더 타당하다. 아마도 민족주의와 장로교 중심적인 이유들 때문에 많은 국내외 역사학자들은 평양대부흥만을 강조하고 있는 것 같다. 하지만 1900년대 초기 한국에서 있었던 대부흥은 원산에서 시작되어 평양에서 절정을 이룬 하나의 대부흥으로 보아야한다.
Many people believe that the Wonsan revival(1903-1906) was a general revival and that the Pyongyang revival(1907) was a great revival occurred as a result of the foreign revivals in Wales, the United Kingdom(1904-1905) and in the Khais Hills, India(1905-1906). However, the Pyongyang great revival was strongly influenced not by the outside revivals but by the Wonsan great revival. Due to several reasons such as Presbyterian-centered nationalism and denominationalism, many people including foreign scholars stress the Pyongyang great revival only. However, the early revival in Korea was one single great revival from Wonsan to Pyongyang.
