이 글에서는 언어 형태와 의미 사이에 나타나는 유사성(언어의 도상성)을 바탕으로 해서 문자 기호의 형태와 기호의 의미 사이에 나타나는 유사성(문자의 도상성)을 살펴보았다. 기호의 도상성이 문자 기호에는 어떻게 적용되며, 또 문자 기호에만 보이는 도상성은 무엇인지를 검토한 후에, 훈민정음에서 발견되는 도상성 문제를 논하였다. 2장에서는 기호 형태가 사물의 형태 및 의미 구성 요소와 관련을 맺는 양상을 통해서 문자의 도상성이 어떻게 의미를 반영하는지 검토하였다. 3장에서는 기호 형태가 발음기관의 모양과 소릿값과 가지는 상관성을 바탕으로 문자의 도상성이 어떻게 소리를 반영하는지 살펴보았으며, 아울러 기호의 배열 순서와 문장 순서의 상관성도 따져보았다. 4장에서는 훈민정음에 반영된 문자의 도상성을 의미와 소리라는 관점에서 세밀하게 살펴서, 훈민정음이 다른 어떤 문자보다 도상성이 강한 문자임을 밝혔다. 5장은 문자 도상성이 가진 여러 가지 속성을 정리하였다. 이 글에서 제기한 문자의 도상성, 훈민정음의 도상성 개념을 통해서 일반문자학 이론 형성에 기여할 수 있을 것으로 생각한다.
This paper examined the similarities between the shapes and meanings of script signs (“script iconicity”) based on the similarities between language forms and meanings (“language iconicity”). The iconicity issues found in Hunminjeongum are discussed after examining how sign iconicity applies to script signs and which features of iconicity are seen only in script signs. Chapter 2 examines how meanings are reflected in script iconicity through the correlation between sign and object shapes or between sign shapes and their semantic components. Chapter 3 looks at how sound is reflected in script iconicity through the correlation between sign and speech organ shapes and between sign shapes and sound values. It also considers the correlation between the order of scripts and the order of sentences. Chapter 4 carefully reviews the iconicity of scripts reflected in Hunminjeongeum in terms of meaning and sound and in so doing reveals that Hunminjeongeum has more iconic features than other scripts. Chapter 5 summarizes the attributes of script iconicity. This paper’s findings of script iconicity and iconcity of Hunminjeongum can contribute to future literary studies.
