오르간 음악의 레파토리는 참으로 방대하다. 시대별로 보더라도 일반 클래식 처럼 바흐의 이전시대와 바흐의 시대, 그리고 낭만시대와 현대시대의 곡에 이르 기까지 범위가 넓고 다양하다. 하지만 일반 클래식 음악과 오르간 음악의 다른 점은 오르간 음악의 대부분은 교회 오르가니스트에 의해 작곡되었다. 왜냐하면 현재도 그렇지만 대부분의 오르간은 일반 음악회 공연장이 아닌 교회에 있기 때문 이다. 교회에 있는 악기로 교회 오르가니스트가 만든 작품은 대부분 교회의 의식, 즉 예배를 위해서 작곡되었다. 하지만 한국교회에서 오르간 음악이라고 하면 찬송가를 치는 악기로만 인식되고 있는 것 같아서 아쉬움이 많았다. 교회에서도 바흐나 멘델스존과 같은 작품들을 연주할 수 있는데 많은 이유로 연주되지 않는 부분에 대한 대안을 찾고자 본 연구를 진행하게 되었다. 연구의 방법과 범위는 교회마다의 현실을 확인하기 위해 오르간음악에 관한몇 가지 설문조사를 실시하여 얼마나 많은 교회에서 찬송가 외 일반 오르간 작품 들이 연주되고 있는지 확인하였으며, 그 이유를 주관식으로 조사하였다. 짧은 시간 내에 많은 답변들이 들어왔는데 100명의 답을 확인한 결과 교회에서는 역시 오르간으로 찬송가만 치는 경우가 많았고, 그 이유는 목회자나 성도들은 아는 음악인 찬송가를 선호하는 경향이 뚜렷하였다. 설문조사에 대한 결과를 본 논문에 개제, 분석하였으며 이후 바흐의 오르간 음악이 얼마나 성서적인지 보여주기 위하여 오르간 작품집 중 Orgelbüchlein에서 몇 곡을 선곡하여 음 형태를 분석하여 설명하였다. 끝으로 목회자와 오르가니스트에게 과제를 부여하여 오르간 음악에 관한 고민을 할 수 있도록 돕는 방식으로 본 연구를 마무리하였는데, 목회자에게는 찬송가책에 있는 노래라고 해도 교회음악의 뿌리에서 나오지 않은 찬송가가 있다는 것을 보여주어 찬송가는 교회음악이고 찬송가가 아닌 것을 세상음악이 아님을 설명하였다. 또한 오르가니스트에게는 찬송가 멜로디를 가진 아카데믹한 오르간 작품들을 소개함으로, 찬송가를 선호하는 한국교회에 교차점이 될 수 있는 작품 연주를 권고하였다. 본 연구를 통하여 오르간 음악에 대한 생각이 달라지는 계기가 되기를 바라 고, 오르가니스트 자신들도 예배준비에 좀 더 최선을 다하여 한국교회 안에서 오르간 음악의 수준을 끌어올리는 역할을 감당하게 되기를 바란다.
There are many various organ music in the academic field. In western music history, the music of the organ is from different periods such as pre-Bach, baroque, romantic, and contemporary. The biggest difference between general western music and organ music is that organists who composed organ music mostly belonged to their churches. Unlike general musical instruments, an organ is usually located in a church. Thus, organ music is for church, especially for a liturgical worship service. But sometimes people in South Korea do not realize that general organ music is church music. For example, an organist in a church of South Korea plays only from the hymnal. It means that the congregation listens hymnic melodies from the organ, not only for hymn playing but also preludes, offertories, and postludes. It is because of people who want to listen to their favorite melodies as well as organists who do not want to prepare for academic work. Organists in South Korea play academic repertoires for their concerts or school juries. They play only songs from the hymn book for their churches. It is the author’s desire for people to understand that most organ works are very suitable for a church and the worship service. This study will focus on understanding the symbolism of Christianity in their music. The purpose of my thesis is to assist pastors and congregations in South Korea and to help them understand the spiritual and Christian roots of these particular compositions and organ music in general. Also it is to let them know the importance of organ relative to church music.
