In recent years, the number of students of ‘Japanese culture and society’ as a Liberal Arts Course in university is increasing. In this research, a questionnaire survey was conducted and analyzed focusing on ‘Reason for enrollment’ and ‘motivation to learn Japanese Language and Japanese culture and society’ etc. According to the survey, the characteristics of most students in ‘Japanese culture and society’ class can be described as follows: ‘Japanese proficiency is not so high’ and ‘direct experience in contact with Japan is not very abundant’. There were many relatively real reasons, such as Japanese employment motivation to attend ‘Japanese culture and society’ course, and received positive feedback that “I learned about Japan by taking a class.” However, motivation for learning Japanese language after taking the course is not large, but motivation for learning Japanese culture and society seems to be great. (1) to (4) are shown as problems to be solved. (1) It is necessary to clarify the purpose (direction) of ‘Japanese culture and society’ course. (2) It is necessary to clarify the scope and level of ‘Japanese culture and society’ as a liberal arts course of the university. (3) It is necessary to create a database of documents and texts. (4) It is necessary to model classroom activities that can make students think about “Japan” With the results of this research as a starting point, I would like to advance research analysis on ‘Japanese culture and society’ as a Liberal Arts Course in University.
