This longitudinal study has traced how Korean students have changed their interest in English and self-efficacy from the 3rd year in middle school to the 3rd year in high school and these changes were examined by looking at the types of private tutoring and the length of participation. First, the analyses of growth mixture modeling detected two latent groups in the changes of students' interest in English. In the first latent group, students' interest in English increased and the second latent group showed a decline in interest. However, there were no latent groups that showed an increase in self-efficacy. Also, the more private tutoring the students had, the more self-efficacy they had. The most popular mode of private tutoring was taking classes at private academies and the percentage of those doing so decreased over the four years. In particular, the percentage of those taking on-line classes and EBS special classes evidently increased in the 3rd grade of high school students. Interest in English and self-efficacy dropped when the students took more private tutoring in the 3rd grade of middle school. To understand the changes in Korean students' interest in English and their self-efficacy, the tutoring patterns should be taken into the consideration by teachers, students and educational policy makers.
