우리사회는 급속도로 저 출산·고령화 사회에 접어들고 있으며, 특히 초고령화 사회를 직면하고 있는 시점에서 인구교육의 필요성이 절실하다고 본다. 인구교육에서는 단순히 출산장려와 고령화 사회의 문제만 다루는 것이 아니라 이러한 결과에 이르기까지 문제가 될 수 있는 다양한 사회현상에 대한 이해와 이를 해결하기 위해 가져야 할 올바른 가치관의 중요성에 대하여 강조하고 있다. 이 논문에서는 2015년도에 인구교육 선도학교인 Y고등학교에서 미술과목과 인구교육을 접목한 프로그램을 구상하여 실행한 인구교육 일환으로서 다문화 이해를 위한 벽화제작 프로젝트 사례를 다룬다. 생명존중, 양성평등, 결혼관, 다양한 가족과 다문화 가정, 세대 간의 평등을 포함하고 있는 인구교육 이후에 진행된 벽화제작 활동 과정에서 학생들은 인구교육의 일환으로서 다문화 이해에 대해 심도 있게 토의하는 모습을 보였다. 또한 다양한 문화를 가지고 있는 사람들이 자신들의 작품을 보았을 때에도 이해하기 쉬우며, 편견 없이 볼 수 있는 작품을 그리기 위하여 노력했다. 궁극적으로 학생들은 벽화제작과정을 통해 많은 사람들과 소통하고 다문화 가정에 대해 이해하게 되었으며, 다문화의 다양성을 수용하고 존중하는 마음을 갖게 되었다.
Low birth rate and an aging population is a serious problem in today’s society. There is a strong need for population education especially in face of a rapidly aging society. Population education not only emphasizes the issue of encouraging childbirth and explaining the problems of an aging society but also the various social implications of these problems and the values needed in order to overcome these issues. This study examines a case study of mural painting facilitating a multicultural understanding from a population education perspective, which was implemented in 2015 through a program that combines art and population education in Y highschool – a population education leading school. In the process of mural production after the population education which dealt with issues of respect for life, gender equality, marriage values, diverse families, equality among different generations, students exchanged in-depth discussions regarding multiculturalism. In addition, students strived to produce murals that could be easily identified by people of diverse cultures and received without bias. They were also able to communicate with numerous people through their mural work and showed an understanding of multicultural families, displaying tolerance and respect towards diversity.
