「취경시화」 중의 후행자는 후세 손오공의 추형으로 비교적 단순한 모습을 보여준다. 그는 문질빈빈한 白衣秀才의 형상으로 출현하여 詩를 짓기도 하며, 법사의 서천취경을 자발적으로 도운다. 또한 작품 중에서 후행자는 세 번의 재난을 극복하는 데 있어서 영웅적인 신통력을 발휘한다. 잡극 「서유기」 중의 법사는 출생 내력에 있어서 독특함을 보여 江流故事와 결합되어 神話化되고 영웅화 된다. 그러나 극 중 초반에서 신화화된 법사는 시골 촌부인 반고아가 揷科打?을 사용하여 노래함으로써 곧 바로 조롱의 대상으로 바뀐다. 또한 법사는 극 중 妖怪를 식별하지 못해 요괴에게 잡혀 가는 등 무능함을 드러내 凡僧으로서의 희극성을 보여준다. 이런 점에서 잡극 「서유기」에 나타난 법사의 희극성은 「취경시화」중 법사의 희극성보다 훨씬 강렬하다.
