1980년대 후반, 여성 운동계에서는 ‘여성 노동자’를 정치적인 집단으로 부각시켜 그들의 노동권에 대한 논의를 유도함으로써 국가 중심적 노동 개념에 도전하고자 하였다. 이러한 상황 속에서 여성 노동자는 사회변혁의 역사적 임무를 부여받은 상징으로 부각되었다. 당시 노동 현장에 뛰어든 많은 학출 여성 노동자들은 여성 노동자로 하여금 연대를 이루게 하고 이에 대한 정치적 관심을 끌어올렸다는 점에서 변혁의 주체로 부각되었다. 바로 이러한 시기에 소설가 김향숙은 그녀의 작품 「얼음벽의 풀」에서 노동자의 ‘도덕’에 대해 고민하는 한 학출 노동자를 조명한다. “‘우리’가 부도덕함을 호흡할 수밖에 없는 집단으로부터 일탈”하여 ‘새로운 우리’를 만들어 연대해야 한다는 도덕 개념을 지니고 있는 소설의 주인공 인애는, 처음의 각오와 달리 자꾸만 회의에 빠져든다. 이러한 인애의 태도는 당대 비평가들로 하여금 “이 작품은 노동문제를 작품의 주된 소재로 채택하면서도 노동현장의 문제보다는 거기에 투신한 한 인물의 심리적 갈등의 묘사에만 주력하고 있어 작가의 문제의식이 지닌 한계를 보다 명확히 보여주고 있다”는 등의 평을 가능케 했다. 본고에서는 「얼음벽의 풀」을 둘러싼 당대의 평에 반하여, 김향숙이 어떠한 방식으로 작품 내에서 행위의 사회적 의미를 구현해내려 했는지를 살펴보았다. 그간 한 번도 주목되지 않았던 인애의 감정, 그녀가 직접 “당도해 보고 싶은 이상한 신세계”라 표현한 연애 감정을 포착함으로써 이 소설을 달리 읽고자 하였다. 80년대 후반, 학출 여성 노동자는 노동 현장으로 들어가길 ‘선택’한 존재였기에, 당시 강한 연대의식을 목적으로 한 섹슈얼리티의 소거는 이들에게 보다 강한 억압으로 다가왔다. 이에 따라 노동 현장에 투신한 주인공이 사랑, 연애의 감정을 느끼고 부유하는 것은 민족․민중주의를 강조하는 80년대의 독법으로도, ‘내향적 인간’의 등장을 위시하는 90년대의 독법으로도 읽히지 않는 문제적 사건이었다는 점에 착안하여 김향숙의 소설을 다시 읽어내고자 한다.
Kim Hyang-sook, who is a writer as called “excellent psychologist” has been estimated that she could show us a contemporary customs by exploring daily life delicately. However, it has been also often criticized that exaggerated psychological description results in concealing the social meaning of the action paradoxically. In this article, I am going to find out how she expressed ‘the social meaning of the action’ in her work, Grass on Ice Wall, which was published at 1989. In this story, Ms. In-e, who is student laborer from university, devoted herself to labor site but then started to feel doubt about it gradually. Through here words and actions, it makes us think about ‘morality’ of student laborers in late 1980's. Kim Hyang-sook said, While writing Grass on Ice Wall, it has never gone away from her head that she agonize about a will for the fierce confrontation between situation and individual, and both wills would be different each other in the long run. Like this, from Ms. In-e's desire for moral life, it keeps readers thinking about this problem repeatedly. Ms. In-e, who is a heroine of Grass on Ice Wall, confessed that she just took a first step for a moral life by escaping from the university. However, here is a trap. She didn't understand well that lots of female student laborers like her were trying very hard to justify themselves as ‘female laborer’, a kind of collective image by stepping into the laborer site enthusiastically. To succeed this kind of discussion, this article will reperuse Grass on Ice Wall with the purpose of finding out ‘morality’ of female-student laborers in 1980’s.
