The Restoration of the Sabbath Tradition and Ecological Conversion: A Proposal of Pope Francis for Peace

오늘날 평화는 우리 모두에게 절박한 명제다. 하지만 평화를 해치는 것은 전쟁을 비롯한 직접적 폭력만이 아니다. 평온한 듯 보이는 일상 속에서도 수많은 사람과 자연의 안녕이 치명적인 위협을 받으며 훼손되고 있다. 프란치스코 교종은 다양한 요인으로 삶의 자리에서 쫓겨난 희생자들을 옹호하고 자연 생태계 파괴를 고발하며 세상의 평화를 위해 헌신해왔다. 교종은『복음의 기쁨』(2013년)과『찬미받으소서』(2015년)에서 인간과 자연 생태계를 파괴하는 세상의 경제·문화적 사회구조를 비판하며, 이 파괴적인 구조를 극복할 수 있는 전망을 제시한다. 세상에 대한 하느님의 의도가 담겨 있는 창조 질서의 보전이 정의이며, 평화는 정의의 결과다. 교종은 정의와 평화 구현을 위해 안식일 전통의 회복과 생태적 회개를 제안한다. 관조와 해방의 안식일 전통은 모든 피조물의 창조 질서를 회복하고 보전하도록 사람들을 일깨워준다. 삼위일체 하느님을 닮은 인간의 내적 구조에 기초한 생태적 회개는 자기 제한을 통해 타자를 배려하고 돌보도록 사람들을 자극한다. 오늘날 안식일 전통과 생태적 회개는 우리가 탐욕과 무관심에 매몰되지 않고 세상의 창조 질서 보전에 헌신하도록 도와주는 신학적, 영성적 원천이다.

Peace is a desperate proposition for all of us today. However, what harms peace is not direct violence alone, including war. Even in seemingly calm everyday life, the well-being of many people and the natural world is being damaged by fatal threats. Pope Francis has devoted himself to the peace of the world, defending the victims who have been driven out of their places of life by various factors and denouncing the destruction of natural ecosystems. In Evengelii Gaudium (2013) and Laudato Si’(2015), the Pope criticizes the economic and cultural social structures of the world that destroy human beings and natural ecosystems; and he presents visions that can overcome these destructive structures. The preservation of the order of creation that embodies God's will for the world is justice, and peace is the result of justice. He has proposed the restoration of the sabbath tradition and ecological conversion to realize justice and peace. The liberating, contemplative sabbath tradition reminds us to restore and preserve the order of creation in all the creatures; and ecological conversion based on an internal human structure resembling the triune God stimulates us to consider and care for others through self-limitation. Today the sabbath tradition and ecological conversion are theological and spiritual sources that free ourselves from the immersion in avarice and indifference and help us commit ourselves to the integrity of the order of creation.
