본고에서는 <운영전>의 창작에 영향을 미친 중국 작품에는 어떤 것이 있는지, 그리고 중국 작품의 인물 형상과 <운영전>의 그것은 어떻게 같고 다른 지에 초점을 두고 연구한 것이다. 그동안 <운영전>에 영향을 미친 중국 작품으로 여러 편이 거론되었으나, 본고의 고찰에 의하면, <운영전>과 밀접한 관련이 있는 작품은 <곤륜노>, <비연전>, <등목취유취경원기>, <녹의인전>, 이 네 작품이다. 본고에서는 이들 작품의 내용과 <운영전>의 내용을 구체적으로 비교하였다. 비교한 결과, <운영전>에서 유영이 등장하는 외부의 두 액자는 <녹의인전>과 <등목취유취경원기>의 내용을 수용한 것이고, 운영의 회상을 담은 내부의 두 액자는 <곤륜노>와 <비연전>의 내용을 수용한 것이다. 그에 따라 운영과 관련된 인물은 홍초기와 비연이고, 김 진사와 관련된 인물은 최생과 조원이다. 그리고 안평대군과 관련된 인물은 일품, 무공업, 가사도고, 특과 비슷한 인물은 마륵이다. 그리고 유영, 자란, 무녀는 <운영전>의 독자적인 인물이다. 그러나 <운영전>은 중국 작품의 영향만으로 이루어진 작품이 아니다. 작가는 중국 작품의 캐릭터를 변용하거나 새롭게 창조하여 <운영전>만의 독특한 매력을 완성했다. 특히 인물을 입체적이면서도 시종일관된 모습으로 만들기 위해 작가는 세부적인 내용 설정과 인물 형상에 공을 많이 들였다. 운영은 홍초기나 비연과 달리, 대담하게 자유연애를 추구하면서도 유교윤리 속에 갇혀 있는 모순적인 인물이다. 이러한 모순성을 합리화하기 위해 작가는 운영의 출신에 관한 내용과 운영이 교육받은 내용을 새롭게 삽입하였다. 김 진사는 최생이나 조원과 달리, 운영과의 사랑을 위해 목숨을 바치는 인물이다. 또한 김 진사는 학문적인 역량도 매우 뛰어난 인물로 형상화되었다. 그러나 큰일에 임해서는 우둔하거나 나약한 면모를 보여주기도 한다. 안평대군은 봉건세력의 중심인물로서 위압적인 면을 보여주면서도, 학문을 좋아하고 문사를 아꼈으며, 자기반성도 할 줄 아는 현명한 인물이다. 이런 점은 중국 작품의 관련 인물과는 다른 면모이다. 특은 이기적이고 계산적인 인물로서, 처음부터 끝까지 악인으로 그려져 있는데, 이는 협객의 면모를 보여주는 <곤륜노>의 마륵과는 다른 캐릭터다. 그 외에, <운영전>의 작가는 유영, 자란, 무녀 등의 독특한 캐릭터를 창조하여 작품의 구조를 다층적으로 만들고, 작품의 주제의식과 인물 형상을 더욱 풍부하게 하였다.

This study investigated character study of Unyeong-jeon(운영전) through comparison with Chinese novels. This study analyzed Kollunno(곤륜노), Biyeon-jeon(비연전), Deungmok-chuiyu-chuikyung-ki(등목취유취경원기), Nokeuiin-jeon(녹의인전) among Chinese novels. And it compared Unyeong-jeon and them. The two frames of outside of Unyeong-jeon accepted to contents of Deungmok-chuiyu-chuikyung-ki, Nokeuiin-jeon. And The two frames of inside of Unyeong-jeon accepted to contents of Kollunno, Biyeon-jeon. According to them, Unyeong(운영) is related to character of Hongchogi(홍초기), Biyeon(비연). Jinsa Kim(김진사) is related to character of Choisaeng(최생), Chowon(조원). And Anpeongdaegun(안평대군) is related to Ilpum(일품), Mugongeup(무공업), Kasado(가사도). Teuk(특) is similar to Mareuk(마륵). Yuyeong(유영), Jaran(자란), Munyeo(무녀) are individual characters. But Unyeong-jeon changed in appearance character of Chinese novels. And Unyeong-jeon created characters. The writer of Unyeong-jeon tried hard figure character and detail contents set. Unyeong is ironic character. She pursued free love. But she trapped Confucian ethics. The writer inserted family and background of Unyeong for rationalize this inconsequence. Jinsa Kim devoted himself for love on Unyeong. This feature is different to Choisaeng, Chowon. And Jinsa Kim is excellent person on scientific ability. But he is stupid and chinless person to grand event. Anpeongdaegun is central figure of feudal society. Therefore he have coercive aspects. But he loved education and literary men. And he is self-reflection man. The these characters are different to them of Chinese novel. Teuk is selfish and calculative person. He is villain throughout. But the Mareuk of Kollunno is chivalry man.
