이 글은 최시형의 생태학적 사유가 어떤 특징을 지니고 있는지 규명하고 오늘날 우리가 참다운 평화의 길을 모색하는 데 그것이 어떤 의의를 지니고 있는지 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 최시형은 과거에 민중과 여성이 통치계층과 남성에 의해 압박을 받고 희생을 당한 것과 마찬가지로 자연 또한 인간에 의해 일방적으로 희생되어왔다고 여겼다. 그러면서도 그는 그 희생을 자연 혹은 신의 자기희생으로 이해했다. 그는 ‘하늘로써 하늘을 먹인다’는 명제를 세워 전체 자연의 시야에서 그것의 희생이 갖는 생태학적인 의미를 훌륭히 논증했다. 이러한 논증을 기반으로 최시형은 이 세상에 참 평화를 이루기 위해서는 우선 민중과 여성뿐 아니라 자연 또한 자기희생적 사랑의 성격을 갖는 일을 해왔다는 진리를 굳게 믿어야 한다고 했다. 그리고 이 확신(信)을 토대로 과거에 제대로 대우받지 못한 민중, 여성뿐 아니라 자연 또한 존귀한 존재로 공경(敬)하는 실천을 해야 자연과 참된 조화에 이를 수 있다고 여겼다. 그는 이 실천을 하는 데 가장 중요한 태도와 원칙으로 정성(誠)과 무위(無爲)를 제시했으며, 이 태도와 원칙을 민중이 자연과 협동적으로 일하는 데에도 적용했다. 필자는 이 생태윤리적 태도와 생태노동적인 원칙이 인류가 참다운 평화의 길로 들어서는 데 한 가지 중요한 단서를 제공하고 있다고 판단한다.
The purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics of Choi Si-hyeong’s ecological thought and also the significance of it for us to find out the true path to peace today. Choi Si-hyeong deemed that as the people and women got suppressed and sacrificed by the ruling class and men in the past, nature, too, was sacrificed unilaterally by humans. But he understood that sacrifice as either nature or God’s self-sacrifice. He formulated the proposition of ‘Serve God with God’ and excellently demonstrated the ecological meaning of that sacrifice in the overall perspective of nature. Based on this demonstration, Choi Si-hyeong says that to realize true peace in this world, first of all, we should have faith in the truth that not only the people and women but nature, too, have been doing what they have to do associated with self-sacrificing love. Grounded on this conviction (信), he believed that we should practice respect (敬) for not only the people and women who had not been treated properly before but also nature as previous beings so as to reach true harmony with nature. As the most important attitude and principle to practice this, he suggested sincerity (誠) and non-action (無爲), and he applied this attitude and principle to the people working cooperatively with nature as well. This author thinks that the attitude of ecological ethics and the principle of ecological labor provide mankind with a crucial clue to enter the path to true peace.
