본고는 국문장편소설 명주옥연기합록 속 하층 인물인 설매를 대상으로, 두 가지 대표적 변신 양상을 살피고, 그 과정에서 드러나는 욕망의 실체를 진단한 후, 설매라는 인물 형상이 지니는 의미를 고찰해 보고자 한 것이다. 설매는 악행으로 출거(黜去)된 주인 조교주와 함께 도술을 익히게 되는데, 조교주보다 먼저 도술을 연마하여 현부를 염탐하는 임무를 맡게 된다. 그러던 중 현희문을 보고 반하여 현희문이 사랑하는 시비 자란을 유인해 연못에 빠뜨려 죽이고 자란의 모습으로 변신하여 현희문의 첩이 된다. 이후 현희문의 부인이 되기 위해 설애란을 납치해 산속에 묻어 없애고 설애란의 모습으로 변신하여 현희문과의 혼인을 적극 추진하는데, 국상(國喪) 등으로 현희문과의 혼인이 계속 미뤄지는 과정에서 정체가 드러나자 자결하는 척하고 도망친다. 변신 과정에서 드러난 설매의 욕망은, 먼저 시비에서 첩, 다시 정식 부인으로의 신분 상승의 욕망을 들 수 있으며, 이 과정에서 지속적으로 천(賤)함에 대한 자각이 나타난다. 다음으로 현의문에 대한 성적 욕망을 들 수 있으며, 이 과정에서 미(美)에 대한 집착이 나타난다. 이와 같은 설매 형상의 의미로, 먼저 ‘욕망 주체의 가능성과 상위(上位)에 대한 회의’를 들 수 있다. 설매 변신의 시작은 주인인 조교주의 욕망을 대신하는 것이었으나, 현희문을 욕망하게 되면서 이후 자신의 것을 욕망하게 되었으며, 여기에는 상층에 대한 회의와 자각이 맞물려 있다. 다음으로는 ‘비본질적 변신과 한계적 자질’을 들 수 있다. 처음 걸인아이로 변신했을 때부터 마지막까지 설매는 상층 인물들에게 그 정체를 간파당했고, 양의와의 사통을 통해 정절 개념이 없는 여성의 모습을 보여주거나 미색에 지나치게 집착하는 등 한계적인 자질을 드러내었다. 결국 설매의 욕망은 좌절되었으나, 설매는 견고한 상하층 질서 속에서 변신이라는 환상 기제를 통해 한시적이나마 그 전복을 시도한 인물임은 분명하다.

This study was conducted to examine the two major aspects of transformation of Seolmae, a low-class character from Myeongjuogyeongihamnok, which is a Korean novel, to diagnose the substance of her desire and the meaning of her character. Seolmae uses the tricks of Taoism to transform into Jaran and Seoraeran and live as them. Her desire was to go up to a higher social class from a maid to a mistress, and from a mistress to an official wife. In this process, she is constantly awakened in regards to the meaning of low social class. Another desire is her sexual desire toward Hyeonuimun. In this process, she is obsessed with beauty. The meaning of Seolmae is that she pursues the desires of her low-class self even after she becomes the owner through transformation. Next, her transformation is non-essential and she still lacks the qualities to become a higher class. Her love affair is limited by her lack of fidelity and obsession with beauty. She constantly transforms herself to realize her desires, but eventually fails to do so. By doing so, she represents her conflicts with other low-class people around her, possible re-alization of her desire to be the center, and the nothingness and limitation of her desires.
