본 연구는 기왕의 연구 결과 및 그 이론적 접근을 토대로 하여 함경 방언의 음고에 대한 음운론적 이해 및 그 유형론을 검토하고, 이를 바탕으로 이 방언의 음고가 진정한 의미의 ‘성조’임을 밝힘으로써 이 방언 음고에 대한 다른 연구자들의 이해를 돕는 것을 목적으로 하였다. 먼저 함경 방언 표면 음성 실현에서 간취되는 상승조, 저조의 변동 양상 및 그 조건 환경을 검토하여 이것이 음고 교체라는 음운 과정 및 관련 규칙의 적용 결과임을 확인하였다. 그 과정에서 상승조는 한 음절에 저조와 고조가 병치된 ‘저고 복합조’로 이해할 수 있으며, 저조의 경우는 이것이 악센트론에서 흔히 말하는 ‘atonic’의 요소가 아니라 단어의 표면 음고 도출 과정에서 반드시 참고하여야 하는 기저 표상의 음운론적 정보임을 밝혔다. 이에 따라 함경 방언이 고조, 저조가 운소적 자격을 갖는 음고 체계를 가지고 있음이 확인되었다. 다음으로 함경 방언의 음고 실현 단위를 검토하면서, 표면 음성의 기계 분석 결과와 무관하게 오직 음운론적 단어 단위의 유일 고조가 음고 교체의 조건이거나 적용 대상임을 확인하였다. 이 과정에서 형태소 단위가 음고 명세의 최소 단위임을 밝혔으며, 이것이 문장 단위의 음고 실현과는 이질적인 특성을 갖고 있음을 확인하였다. 마지막으로 이상의 논의 결과를 운율 요소의 일반언어학적 유형론과 대조하여, 함경 방언의 음고가 악센트가 아닌 성조로 파악되어야 함을 밝혔다.
Based on the findings of the existing studies and its theoretical approach, this paper examines the phonological understanding and the typology of the pitch in Hamgyeong dialect. The purpose of this paper is to help other researchers to understand the pitch in that dialect as TONE, not as ACCENT. First, I reviewed the phonetic realizations and phonological conditions of the surface pitch, rising and low pitch in that dialect. Those phonetic realization of pitch are the result of applying the rule of alternation of pitch. As following discussion, the surface rising pitch cannot be identified as underlying tone, and especially the surface low pitch also has its underlying specification as a phonological unit of underlying representation. That means the low pitch is not "atonic". So there is the pitch system which composed of High and Low pitch in that dialect. Next, examining the unit of realization of pitch, I confirmed that the only one High pitch in Phonological Word can be the phonological condition of the rule of alternation of pitch, regardless of the mechanical analysis of the surface pitch frequency. Then I showed that the minimum unit of underlying representation of pitch is MORPHEME. At the conclusion, based on the typological theory of the prosodeme, I confirmed the H, L pitch in Hamgyeong dialect as TONE, not as ACCENT.
