본 논문의 목적은 2000년대 이후 강화되고 있는 미국과 중국의 우주군사 개발과 상호 경쟁이 사드의 한국배치에 대한 美中간 대립의 핵심적인 원인임을 증명하는 것이다. 사드의 한국배치를 전후하여 현재까지 이루어진 연구들은 주로 사드의 북한 미사일 방어에 대한 군사적 효용성 여부에 집중하거나, 혹은 美中간 패권경쟁의 원인과 이의 심화 과정을 분석한 후, 이 과정에서 향후 한국이 지향해야 하는 효과적인 외교전략을 도출하는데 주력하고 있다. 그러나 본 논문은 이러한 기존의 연구성과들에 대한 비판적 분석을 바탕으로 하여, 사드의 한국 배치에 대한 연구視野를 우주공간으로까지 확대시킴으로써, 韓美中간의 사드 갈등에 대한 보다 입체적인 원인분석과 향후 전망을 제시하는데 기여할 것이다.
This paper aims to verify that the space race between the U.S. and China, which has been intensified since 2000s, is one of main reasons which caused two nations’ confrontation on the deployment of THAAD in Korea. Previous researches conducted after the deployment of THAAD in Korea are mainly focused on the military utility of THAAD in defending North Korea’s missile attack, or South Korea’s effective diplomatic strategies based on the analysis of the development process of the U.S.-China hegemonic competition. On the other hand, this paper, on the basis of critical analysis and assessment of existing research results, expands the research scope for the deployment of THAAD in Korea into outer space and suggests a more three-dimensional cause analysis and future prospect for the THAAD conflict among South Korea, the U.S., and China. Therefore, this paper eventually contributes to South Korea devising more effective strategic measures to resolve the THAAD conflict.
