소론 철학의 정체성에 대한 논의는 상대적으로 미흡한 단계에 머물러 있다. 그만큼 소론 철학의 특징을 선명하게 보여주는 저서를 발견하기가 어렵기 때문이다. 이러한 상황에서 金載海의 유고인 『雙湖草稿』는 소론 철학의 통일성과 흐름을 파악하는 데 더없이 중요한 자료가 된다. 여기에 수록되어있는 글들은 한편 한편이 성리학의 핵심 주제에 대한 완성된 논문의 성격을 띠고 있고, 호론․낙론과의 논쟁을 거치며 소론의 견해를 집약해놓은 것이어서 소론 철학의 특징을 밝혀가는 기폭제가 되기에 충분하다. 외부의 자극을 인지하고 이에 대해 반응하는 기제를 知覺이라 하는데 이에 대한 이해의 차이가 학파를 형성한다. 이이․송시열을 계승한 호론에서는 그 사람의 기질이 그 사람의 지각을 결정하는 것으로 본다. 이러한 지각론에 따르면, 윤리 의식도 지각의 범주 안에 들어있는 것으로서 禮를 배우고 익혀야만 비로소 발현된다. 이에 반하여 김재해는 마음의 기인 神明과 육체의 기인 形氣를 엄밀히 구분한다. 이러한 구분은 심층의식과 감정을 체와 용으로 구분하기 위한 준비과정으로서, 결국 심층의식이 安定 상태를 유지하고 있어야만 어떤 사태를 만나도 적절한 지각 반응으로 나타나는 것이지, 심층의식이 안정 상태를 유지하지 못하면 부적절한 지각 반응으로 나타날 수밖에 없다고 보는 것이다. 어떤 학파의 관점에서 보더라도 지각은 생존을 위한 반응이어서 이기적인 면모를 띠기 마련이다. 그래서 이러한 이기적인 면모가 개입되지 않은 이상적인 상태를 상정하게 되는데 이것을 未發이라고 한다. 호론에서는 기질이 아예 작동하지 않은 상태를 미발로 보고, 김재해는 심층의 순수의식을 미발로 본다. 김재해의 지각론과 미발론을 다른 소론 학자들의 견해에 견주어보면 주장하는 바가 대체로 같다는 것을 알 수 있다. 허령을 심층의 순수의식으로, 지각을 감정으로 구분한 뒤 허령을 실질적인 리로 보는 것이 소론 철학의 일반적인 특징이라고 정리할 수 있다.
Discussions about the identity of the Soron(少論) school remain relatively weak. The main reason is that it is difficult to find a book that clearly shows the characteristics of the Soron school. In this situation, Ssanghochogo(雙湖草稿) written by Gim Jaehae(金載海) is very precious, because that it shows the characteristics of the Soron school. Jigak(知覺, perception) is the mechanism that senses external stimuli and responds to them, and a school is formed according the opinion of it. The horon(湖論) school insists that Jigak(perception or emotion) is determined by the temperament(氣質), and consciousness(意志 or 意識) is also part of Jigak(知覺 and 感情). On the other hand, Gim Jaehae distinguished between Jigak(知覺, emotion) and heoryeong(虛靈, consciousness), and insisted that heoryeong acts on its own or lies deep in Jigak. According to this view, a person with stable consciousness would respond appropriately when something happens, and a person with unstable consciousness can’t do so in small situations. Perception is inherently selfish because of responds to survival. However it can be assumed such state that there is no selfishness, and it is called mibal(未發). The horon school regards mibal as the state in which any emotion is not yet occurred, and Gim Jaehae regards it as pure consciousness in which emotion is not mixed. The view of Gim Jaehae is the key feature of the Soron school.
