This study is based on a novel called Wolf Totem, which was published in 2004. I observedWolf Totem's publishing, planning, marketing process and copyright management by "ChangJiang Literature Publishing Company Beijing Book Center", which was built in the process of adapting to the market demand after the 2000s. Wolf Totem is a story of what a young man from Beijing has seen and heard and felt while living in the Inner Mongolian grasslands. In addition to the publication and marketing of the work, I have looked at the responses and debates among readers which were arising after Wolf Totem became the "best seller" through the making-issue marketing. In the meantime, I was able to think about the changes that occured between the debates around 2004, when the novel Wolf Totem was published, and after 2015 when the movie Wolf Totem was screened. This is only a very specific example; however, since the planning and marketing, foreign book rights trading, and movie rights management of Wolf Totem are being mentioned and studied as examples of successful milestones in the publishing industry, I think it is a meaningful study to look at a part of the contemporary Chinese literature production mechanism.
