최근 한국정치사상 분야의 연구 경향과 과제에 대한 논의가 다양하게 진행되고 있는 상황에서 본 연구는 그러한 논쟁을 종합하여 서술한 것이다. 우선 한국정치사상 분야의 학문적 성과를 소개하고 연구공동체의 형성, 연구방법론 모색, 그리고 한국정치사상사 교재편찬에 대해 논의되었던 내용을 소개하였다. 이러한 논쟁점 중에서 빈번하게 거론되었던 것은 한국정치사상의 학문적 정체성에 관한 것이었다. 이것은 한국의 전통사상과 문화를 연구한다는 점에서 한국정치사상 분야가 정치학의 학문적 정체성 형성의 원천이라는 기대가 있었기 때문이었다. 그러한 정체성에 관한 논의에 있어서는 서양정치사상이 정치사상의 본령으로 여겨지고 있는 한국 정치학계의 상황에서 연구자가 속해있는 한국이란 연구대상은 어떤 의미가 있는지에 관한 논의를 소개하였다. 그러면서 과연 한국적인 것은 무엇이고, 한국적인 것을 찾아가는 것이 바람직한 것인지에 대해 논의하였다. 또한 한국정치사상 연구에 있어서는 개념과 관념 중심의 고전적인 연구관점으로부터 역사적 사례 분석과 서술에 이르기 까지 다양하고 혼합적인 연구 경향이 존재하는데, 이러한 학계의 상황에서 한국정치사상 분야에서는 역사적 사례, 역사적 서술의 관점에 대해 어떻게 이해할 것인지에 대한 논의하였다. 그리고 한국 정치사상 연구자들은 현실정치에 대해 정치사상적으로 어떤 제안을 제시할 수 있는지에 대한 학계의 기대를 소개하고 연구자들이 관심을 가져야 할 주제로서 민족주의, 재산권 등을 제안하였다.

Recently the study of Korean political philosophy and thought has become a promising research field in Korean political science. The number of scholars who specialize in Korean traditional thinking has increased since the beginning of the 1990`s. And they have organized The Association for Korean and Asian Political Thought and The Korean Society for Political Thought. Now this field is recognized as important field of political theory in Korean political science. In this study, I have reviewed the critical problems and issues in Korean political thought research. First, I have suggested that we need to think about Korean political thought in the context and from the perspective of Korean political theory. Second, I have described the problem of methodology of Korean political thought. Usually in political thought study, scholars focus on the concepts and ideas analysis of political thinkers or Ideology. But some scholars insist that in Korean political thoughts study korean history should be considered and focused on the description and analysis of Korean political thought. So I suggest that historical study also should be considered. Lastly, I discuss the criticism of Korean political scientists that political science professors and scholars` research is an empty vision of the ideal world. So I propose that even in political thought study we need to focus more on real politics and policy oriented research. And I suggest the study of nationalism and the rights of property ownership as urgent research issues in Korean political thought.
