<옥자>와 <미스터 고>는 한국 괴물영화의 새로운 양상을 보여주는 작품이다. 두 영화는 괴물을 악마화하지 않는다. 돌연변이 슈퍼 돼지인 옥자와 야구하는 고릴라인 링링은 착한 괴물이다. 그들은 ‘괴이한 생명체’이지만 인간에게 위해를 가하지 않는다. 10대 소녀 영웅의 등장도 중요한 특징이다. 미자와 웨이웨이는 성인 남성, 전문가 중심의 모험 서사 주인공들과 차별화되는 인물이다. 그들은 ‘인간 괴물’과 맞서 싸워 과업을 달성함으로써 영웅의 지위를 획득한다. <옥자>와 <미스터 고>는 ‘착한 인간 대 나쁜 괴물’이라는 괴물영화의 전형적인 대립 구도에서 벗어나 있다. <옥자>와 <미스터 고>의 인물들이 싸우는 대상은 추악한 자본주의적 욕망에 사로잡힌 다국적 기업 경영자와 프로야구 에이전트이다. 이때 그들의 무기는 용기와 도덕성, 순수함이다. ‘산골-대도시-산골’로 정리되는 인물들의 공간 이동은 21세기 문명 세계와 자연친화적인 세계의 대비로 나타난다. 두 영화는 이를 통해 원시신화적인 세계를 대안 공간으로 제시한다. 시대의 비윤리성을 비판하는 동시에 현실이 아닌 곳을 갈망하는 우리 안의 내밀한 욕망을 표현하는 것이다. 이는 국내 괴물영화의 새로운 영역이며, 그 중심에 착한 괴물과 소녀 영웅이 있다.
<Okja> and <Mr. Go> are the two Korean films that explore new trends of monster movies. The two films do not demonize the monsters. Rather, the mutant super pig “Okja” and baseball player gorilla “Ring Ring” are good monsters. They are disfigured creatures, but exert no harm on human beings. Another important fact is the appearance of teenage girls. The teenagers, Mija and Wayway, differ from the typical epic heroes who are male adult and experts at adversaries. The little teenagers of the two films attain the status of heroins by fighting the human monsters and accomplishing their tasks. <Okja> and <Mr. Go> open a new horizon by incapacitating the typical tension between ‘good humans’ and ‘bad monsters.’ The foes the heroins fight against in <Okja> and <Mr. Go> are the pro baseball agents and executives of multinational corporation. The weapons of the heroins are courage, morality and innocence. The change of settings from country to big city and back to country dramatizes the contrast between 21st century civilization and nature-friendly world. The two films show the primitive mythic world as an the alternative society. They express the inner desire of people who like to turn to a world replacing the present world of immorality. These films suggest a new perspective of monster films in the middle of which stand the struggling teenage worriors.
