제리 포도(Jerry Fodor)와 어니스트 르포어(Ernest Lepore)는 추론 역할 의미론은 의미 구성적인 추론과 그렇지 않은 추론을 구분할 수 없기 때문에 우리가 적절한 의미 이론에게서 기대하는 의미 합성성을 설명하지 못하고 결과적으로 의미의 불안정성으로 이어진다는 점에서 결코 수용할 수 없는 이론이라고 주장한다. 추론주의 의미 이론을 옹호하는 이병덕 교수는 윌프리드 셀라스(Wilfred Sellars)가 제안한 반사실적 강건성 개념을 이용하여 이들의 비판을 벗어날 수 있다고 주장한다. 나는 반사실적 강건성 개념이 제기된 문제를 해결할 수 있다는 주장에 동의하지 않는다. 대신에 추론주의 의미 이론을 바탕으로 의사소통을 바라보는 관점의 전환을 이루는 것이 이 문제에 대한 올바른 대응 방식임을 주장한다.
Jerry Fodor and Ernest Lepore argue that conceptual role semantics can not distinguish between meaning-constitute inferences and non meaning-constitute ones, so we can not explain semantic compositionality that we expect from appropriate semantic theories. They also point out that conceptual role semantics inevitably leads to semantic instability. Lee Byeong-deok, a proponent of inferentialist semantics, claims to be able to escape the criticism using Wilfred Sellars's concept of counterfactual robustness. I do not agree with the claim that the concept of counterfactual robustness can solve the problem raised. Instead, I argue that the transformation of the viewpoint of communication based on the Inferential theory of meaning is the right way to deal with this problem.
