A Philosophical Consideration of Me Too Movement in Korea

2018년 한국에서의 미투(Me Too) 운동의 원인을 윤리적 측면에서 분석하는과정에서 다양한 철학적 문제들을 발견하게 되었다.1) 우리 사회의 미투운동을 유발하게 된 원인에서 특징적인 것은 서열문화에 기반한 시선의 비대칭성이 존재한다는 것이다. 사회적 지위를 매개로 한 가해 행위는 우선, 사회의 변화에 따른 가치관의 변화가 수반되지 않은 채 ‘어른 대우’ 및 공경을 강요하는 데서 파생된 면이 있다. 윤리적 측면에서 보면, 인간을 대하는 태도와 인식에 있어서 타자성에 대한 이해의 부족도 그 원인이 되었다고 할 수 있다. 몸-정신 주체로서의 타자를 인정하지 않은 채 자신의 욕동을 타인에게 강요하는 일종의 도발과 침투가 상대방에게 고통을 야기한 것이다. 또한다양한 주체들의 지각이 상대를 이해하고 인식하는 데서 오는 애매성이 개입되면서 의사소통에 장애가 초래된 것이다. 대안은 타자성의 수용과 환대, 그리고 서(恕)의 자세를 견지하는 것이다. 또한 타인과의 대면에서 언표되지 않은 말을 읽어내는 도덕적 공감 능력을 함양하는 것이다. 다양한 지각의 모호성을 극복하기 위해서는 에티켓의 숙지와 연습이 필요하다. 자유로운 개인이 미래의 사회와 개인적 삶의 발전을 위한 파트너로서 타인과 조화로운 관계를 맺기 위해서는 철학적 교양교육의 정례화가 요청된다.

The fundamental assumption of this paper is that Me Too Movement, a movement against sexual harassment and sexual assault, has raised some essential ethical issues, and this paper examines the issues through exploring the relationship between the other and myself. The most noteworthy factor inherent in the Movement is the age-old, feudal social structure whose traditional ethics have forced juniors to obey the seniors in the society, which has resulted in the violation of the humans rights. The objectification of others using the social status and power can be a starting point of the most fundamental injustice. In addition, what the Movement suggests is that ethical problems can always happen between others and myself. We should approve Other as independent beings as a body-subjects and accept otherness distinct from myself, which modern philosophers like Merieau Ponty and Levinas thought as important values. Seo(恕), one of the traditional eastern ethics, is very exemplary because men with the ethic can be considerate of Other through sympathizing with Other and try to pursuit the harmonious relationship through the virtue of self-sacrifice. Making relationships with others implies the social nature in terms of these existential, ethical aspects. Finally, it is desirable that the focus of today’s liberal and moral education should be in understanding the human relationships in the various aspects such as otherness, ambiguity of perception, hospitality and considerateness.
