이 연구는 화쟁사상을 적용하여 홍익인간 교육이념을 보완해보고자 하는 목적 하에 연구를 진행하였다. 연구의 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 홍익인간 교육이념은 체계와 내용의 부재, 이데올로기적 왜곡의 문제, 교육이념을 둘러싼 갈등이 지속되어 온 문제가 있었으며, 교육이념이 답해야 할 새로운 시대적 요구로는 새로운 민족주의와 민주주의교육, 포스트모더니즘과 지식기반사회의 요구, 생태주의 교육의 요구 등이 있다. 둘째, 화쟁사상은 화해와 통합의 사상이라는 점, 이데올로기를 극복할 수 있는 깨달음의 사상이라는 점, 일심이문의 체계와 일심무애화쟁의 내용을 갖추고 있다는 점 등에서 홍익인간 교육이념을 보완할 수 있는 가능성을 보여준다. 또한 통일과 생태주의, 포스트모더니즘, 민족주의와 다문화교육, 지식기반사회의 창의융합적 지식과 같은 새로운 시대적 요구에도 답할 수 있다는 점에서 교육이념으로서의 적합성을 보여준다. 셋째, 홍익인간 교육이념을 보완하는 화쟁의 교육이념은 화쟁하는 인간, 화쟁하는 사회, 화쟁하는 교육을 추구한다. 홍익인간 교육이념을 실현하기 위한 화쟁의 교육이념은 교육적 원리로 조화롭게 어울리되 무조건 하나됨을 강요하지 않는 불일불이의 원리, 각각의 현상과 진리를 부정하면서 보다 높은 차원에 대한 이해로 나아가는 긍정과 부정, 개합과 입파의 자재의 원리를 제시할 수 있다.
The purpose of this study is to propose a new educational ideal replacing the HongIkIngan educational ideal. The results of this study are as follows : First, HongIkIngan educational ideal have problems as such: the absence of system and contents, distorted ideology, HongIkIngan educational ideal and social conflict. Second, The ideas of HwaJaeng is that an ideas of conciliation and coordination, of overcoming a distorted ideology, of democracy and nationalism and of systemic. Because of this, the ideas of HwaJaeng can take place of the educational ideal of HongIkIngan. Also, The ideas of HwaJaeng is correspondence with unification, ecology and postmodernism that urgent questions in Korea education. Third, The educational ideal of HwaJaeng seeks for human, society and education to harmonize the various disputes, seeks for educational principles not adhering the two and not keeping the one, boundlessness of the positive and the negative.
