이 논문은 애정류 신작 구소설에 등장하는 책 읽는 여성 형상을 설명하기 위해 집필되었다. 주요 연구 내용은 두 가지이다. 첫째, 애정류 신작 구소설에 등장하는 책 읽는 여성 형상은 전대의 고소설에 등장하는 인물들과 어떻게 다른가. 둘째, 소설사에서 새롭게 등장한 책 읽는 여성 주체가 서사에 안착할 수 있었던 요인은 무엇인가. 고소설에서 책 읽는 여성은 다양한 양식의 작품들에서 발견된다. 이들의 형상화에는 남성 중심의 여성 이해가 관철되고 있다. 책 읽는 여성은 남성이 원하는 여성상에 근접해 가는 존재이거나 이미 이를 타고난 여성으로 비쳐진다. 독서를 자기 계발의 과정이라 할 때, 자신과 세상에 대한 이해와 성찰 없이 피동적인 훈육의 과정으로만 여성의 독서가 제시된다는 점에서 고소설에 형상화된 책 읽는 여성은 말 그대로 책 읽는 여성일 뿐, 여성 주체라고 하기 어렵다. 애정류 신작 구소설에서 책 읽는 여성은 귀족적 영웅소설의 여주인공의 형상을 계승하면서도 새로운 여성 이해와 자각을 보인다. 가령 <난봉기합>에서 이채봉의 독서는 여성에게 부여된 삶을 배우고 내면화하는 과정이 아니라 스스로의 욕망에 따라 자신의 인생을 탐색하고 개척하는 행위로 이해된다. 이는 책 읽는 여성이 여성의 자각과 계몽 의지를 독자에게 격려하는 사례로 쓰이고 있음을 보여준다. <약산동대>・<미인도> 등에서도 책 읽는 여성은 반동인물에 맞서 스스로의 인생을 개척하는 존재로 그려진다. 애정류 신작 구소설은 책 읽는 여성 주체를 제시하는 것이다. 책 읽는 여성 주체가 신작 구소설에서 새롭게 등장한 인물 형상이라는 점에서, 그 이질성을 무마하는 요인들이 무엇인지 탐색될 필요가 있다. 애정류 신작 구소설에서는 다양한 요인들에 의해 책 읽는 여성 주체는 서사에 안착하고 있다. 첫째는 향학열을 매력적인 인물의 자질로 제시한다는 점이다. 향학열은 주인공이 박대받거나 성공하게 되는 사유로 제시된다는 점에서 귀족적 영웅소설의 천수(天數)와 유사한 기능을 한다. 둘째는 학문 숭상의 가치관이 작품 전편에서 나타난다는 점이다. 귀족적 영웅소설에서 영웅의 무공과 승리가 공동체의 환호를 받았다면, 신작 구소설에서는 학문 숭상이 그 자리를 대신하는 것이다. 셋째는 서책이 사건 전개에 유기적으로 관여한다는 점이다. 서책이 단순한 배경물이 아니라 기능물로 다루어지면서 책 읽는 여성도 자연스러운 존재로 부각되었다.

This paper aims to examine the advent of reading woman subjectivity in Shinjak-Gusoseol. The main points are as below. First, what are the differences of reading woman between Shinjak-Gusoseol and old Korean novel. Second, what are the factors which made the reading woman subjectivity settle down in the narrative. Reading woman can be found in the variety of old Korean novel. The representation of her stands on the man’s understanding of woman. She is a woman close or born to man’s hopeful person. If we consider reading as a process of self enlightenment, since the reading of woman is presented without understanding or reflection about the self and the world and just in the process of learning about a man’s hopeful woman, the reading woman is not a subject but a person in old Korean novel. In Shinjak-Gusoseol, a reading woman succeed to the heroine of hero novel but stands on new understanding of woman. For example, in a text, the reading of heroine is presented as a process of exploring her life with her’s own desire. She takes part in enlightening the readers as a good sample. Therefore she can be considered as a reading woman subject. Since a reading woman subject is a new character in Shinjak-Gusoseol, it is necessary to search what are the factors to reduce the dissimilarity. We can find some factors to settle down the reading woman subject to narrative. First, zeal for learning is presented as a attractiveness of character. Second, the values of study is shown in the whole narrative. Third, a book takes part in the process of events. In these factors, the reading woman has become a normal character.
