이 논문은 헤겔의 『정신현상학』에서 자연종교와 예술종교의 개념과 위상을 밝히는 것을 목적으로 한다. 정신현상학에서 종교는 도덕성과 철학 사이에 위치한다. 이른바 자기 확신적 정신과 절대지 사이에 놓여 있는 종교는 의식 경험의 최고봉에 속한다. 철학을 대변하는 절대지는 종교적 경험 없이 마련될 수 없기 때문이다. 종교적 경험은 자연종교에서 예술종교를 거쳐 계시종교로 나아간다. 자연종교는 정신의 직접성을 드러낸다면 예술종교는 정신의 대자성을 표현한다. 헤겔은 자연종교에서 빛종교, 식물종교, 동물종교를 다루며 장인의 의미를 밝힌다. 예술종교에서 그리스종교를 집중적으로 분석하며 운명, 서사시, 비극, 희극에 나타난 정신의 대자성을 드러낸다. 대자적 정신은 자기의 개념에 도달하지 못한 미완의 정신이다. 예술종교는 정신의 자기관계를 완성하는 계시종교로 이행한다. 자연종교와 예술종교는 의식의 경험을 완성하는 중요한 계기들로서 절대지를 향해가는 정신의 단계를 보여준다. 자연종교와 예술종교는 단순히 과거 형태의 종교로 치부될 수 없으며 삶에서 언제나 확인할 수 있는 인간 정신의 특징들이다.
This paper sheds light on the status of natural religion and art religion in Hegel’s Phenomenology of Spirit. In the Phenomenology, religion lies between morality and philosophy. One of the highest experiences of consciousness is the religion that lies between the so-called self-confident spirit and the absolute knowledge because the absolute knowledge embodied by philosophy cannot be established without the experience of religion. The religious experience goes first from natural religion to art religion, and finally to revealed religion. While the natural religion manifests the immediacy of spirit, the art religion expresses the spirit for itself. Hegel discusses the manifestations of natural religion as light religion, plant and animal religion, and elucidates the meaning of the artificer’s products. As for the art religion, Hegel focuses on the Greek religion, which he analyzes to reveal the spiritual work of art in fate, and in epic, tragedy, and comedy. The spirit for itself is an incomplete spirit that could not reach its own concept. Thus, the art religion moves on to the revealed religion, which completes the spiritual self-relation. Natural religion and art religion are important phases in the completion of consciousness towards the absolute knowledge. Nonetheless. natural religion and art religion cannot merely be regarded as religions of the past; rather, they are particular attributes of the human consciousness, which can always be seen in one’s life.
