『혼일강리역대국도지도混一疆理歷代國都之圖Honil Gangni Yeokdae Gukdo Ji Do』에 수록된 서역지방의 한자로 음역된 많은 지명이 지금의 어디를 말하는지는 아직도 완전히 풀리지 않은 숙제이다. 이를 알아보기 위한 방법의 하나로 『혼일강리역대국도지도』 보다 이전시대에 제작되었고 당시 서역(아랍권)에서 살던 사람들이 만든 지도를 조사하여 비교함으로써 『혼일강리역대국도지도』의 서역지명 이해에 다가갈 수 있을 것으로 생각한다. 여기서는 아랍권에서 만들어진 지도 중에서 가장 내용이 풍부한 이드리시의 세계지도를 대상으로 조사하여 보았다. 먼저 이드리시 지도의 고해상도의 사진을 구하고, 이드리시 al-Idrisi가 저술한 『세계를 여행하려는 사람을 위한 유희의 책』을 분석하여 지명 데이터베이스를 작성하였다. 그리고 이드리시 세계지도를 모사하여 아랍어가 아닌 우리말로 지명을 붙여보았다. 완성된 것은 아니지만 관심 있는 학자들의 연구에 보탬이 되기를 바란다.
Many old names of western places on the map of ’Honil Gangni Yeokdae Gukdo Ji Do’ have not been matched to current place names. To identify the unproven place names, the author investigated Muhammad al-Idrisi’s map, a map with comprehensive information made before ‘Honil Gangni Yeokdae Gukdo Ji Do’ in Arab region. The database of old and current place names was made based on a high resolution picture of Muhammad al-Idrisi’s map and his book titled ‘Kitb nuzhat al-mushtq f ikhtirq al-fq’. In addition, the author reconstructed the Muhammad al-Idrisi’s map and assigned names for places in Korean instead of Arabic. Although this study has not been completed yet, it is hoped that it can be used by other researchers who are interested in this subject.
