인간 타락의 원인 규명은 실로 복잡하다. 다양한 원인들이 복합적으로 작용하여 ‘타락’이라는 결과가 도출되었기 때문이다. 하나님, 인간, 사탄, 뱀, 선악과 등 복잡다단한 원인들이 서로 거미줄처럼 얽히고설켜 타락이라는 결과가 도출되었기 때문에 타락의 궁극적 책임 소재를 파악하기가 실로 어려운 것이 바로 인간의 타락 사건이다. 본고는 이렇게 얽히고설킨 타락의 원인들을 아리스토텔레스의 4중 원인론에 입각해 도르트 신경의 빛 아래서 풀어보려는 시도를 한다. 그 결과 다음과 같은 결과가 도출된다. 타락의 질료적 원인은 사탄과 사탄의 유혹(혹은 충동)이며, 형상적 원인은 인간의 교만과 탐심에 근거한 불신앙이고, 작용 원인은 인간의 자유 선택 의지, 목적 원인은 하나님의 공의롭고 기쁘신 숨겨진 뜻으로 이해할 수 있다. 이러한 4중 원인의 틀 가운데서 인간 타락을 볼 경우에 여러 가지 신학적‧실천적 유익이 발생된다. 사탄을 하나님의 수준에까지 끌어올리지 않고 하나님의 통제 안에 있는 타락의 도구적 질료 정도로 볼 수 있는 시각을 제공하며, 형상적 원인인 인간의 마음을 지키는 것이 신자의 삶 속에서 얼마나 중요한 것인가가 절감되며, 작용 원인인 인간의 자유 선택 의지에 대한 고찰을 통해 죄의 궁극적 책임 소재를 파악할 수 있게 되었을 뿐만 아니라, 목적 원인인 타락을 향한 하나님의 기쁘신 뜻에 대한 묵상은 하나님을 하나님으로 인정할 수밖에 없는 발판을 우리에게 제공해준다.
To know the cause of human fall is very complicated. For human fall was occurred through combining diverse complicated and multi-layered causes, such as God, Adam, Eve, Satan, the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge, etc. In light of the Canons of Dort, this study tries to unravel knotty causes of human fall based on the Aristotle’s fourfold cause(the material, formal, efficient, and final cause). This study argues that the material cause of human fall is Satan and Satan’s temptation; the formal cause is Adam and Eve’s unbelief based on their arrogance and greed; the efficient cause is Adam and Eve’s free choice of the will; and the final cause is God’s righteous, pleased, and hidden will. This study then tries to find the theological and practical implication which comes from the fourfold cause of human fall. The fact that the material cause of human fall is Satan and Satan’s temptation provides a perspective to regard Satan not as almighty God, but as a material tool in God’s absolute control; the perspective of the formal cause(i.e., human’s unbelief) helps to realize how important to keep mind in the Christian life; that of the efficient cause(i.e., free choice of the will) provides an opportunity to clarify where the fundamental responsibility of human fall lies; and that of the final cause(i.e., God’s pleased and hidden will) gives an opportunity to contemplate God’s absolute sovereignty.
