Jean Rhys, author of the Wide Sargasso Sea and Assia Zebar, the writer of Femme d’Alger dans leur appartement are much like each other in many ways such as female writers, being born and raised in a place under colonial rule, going to England and France, the countries of colonialism, being able to speak multiple languages freely, and etc. These parts can be thought of as related to the fact that they have a multicultural background. And most of all, the fact that these two works are based on the above and protest against colonialism, it is a category that tells us that these two resemble each other. I do not think there will be a big objection to the fact, nevertheless, these two writers are similar and different at the same time. Likewise, it seems to resemble what they want to say in their works that they are drawing, and yet it is also different. And with this emphasis, in the view that Jean Rhys is creating a mad tapestry that can lead to silence, and in the sense that Zebar draws the arabesque of voices close to silence, let us compare the works of these two which resemble each other and are different simultaneously on this paper. In the Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys and in Femme d’Alger dans leur appartement by Assia Zebar, I would like to study if and how women under double oppression who must be Spivak’s “subalterns” can speak in these works.
