본고에서는 김윤식이 1858년에 지은 「권겸산전」에 나타난 권옥의 행적과 18세기 이전에 형상화된 유협의 행적을 비교하고 유협의 형상이 변모된 양상 및 원인을 살펴보았다. 그 결과 18세기 이전에 형상화된 유협의 행적은 백성을 경제적으로 도와준 것은 자세히 서술되었고 여타 문제를 해결한 것은 간략히 기술되었다. 반면 권옥의 행적은 백성의 고통을 초래한 다양한 사회 문제들이 거론되었고, 권옥과 부패한 지배 세력의 대립 구도를 중심으로 그들을 비판하고 징치한 사실, 그리고 그것과 관련된 인물들의 감성적 반응을 입체적으로 서술하여 사회 변화를 위한 의지 및 실천이 구체적으로 묘사되었다. 이러한 유협 형상의 변모는 첫째, 18세기 이전과 19세기의 역사적 상황의 차이에서 비롯된 것이었다. 경제적으로 불안정했던 18세기와 달리 19세기는 사회 전반적으로 구조적 모순이 극심해진 시기로, 백성이 사회의 변화를 절실히 갈망한 시기였다. 둘째, 신분 제도에 항거한 중인 또는 불우한 신세에 처하여 일상에 침잠한 선비와 달리, 젊은 지식인 김윤식은 사회 전반의 문제를 직시하고 그것을 척결하려는 문제의식을 갖고 있는 서술자였다. 그래서 사회의 구조적 모순을 과감히 해결하여 사회의 변화를 모색할 수 있는 주역을 형상화하기 위해 기존의 유협을 서사적으로 변용하여 권옥을 입전하였다.
Comparing the traces of the past of Kwon Ok in 「Kwon Kyeomsan Jeon」 written by Kim Yoon-Sik in 1858 with the traces of the past of chivalrous persons described before the 18th century, I examined the aspects and causes of transfiguration of chivalrous person shape. Consequently, in the case of the traces of the past of chivalrous persons described before the 18th century, helping financially the people was described in detail and solving other problems was described briefly. On the other hand in the case of the traces of the past of Kwon Ok, various social problems brought out suffering of the people were concretely referred. Based on conflict composition of Kwon Ok and corrupt ruling power, the fact that Kwon Ok criticized and disciplined corrupt ruling power was also described concretely. Moreover the strong will and practice for social reform were described through the emotional responses of characters described with diversified. These transfigurations of chivalrous person shape were caused by differences of historical circumstances of the 19th century and before the 18th century. Economic insecurity was rampant in the 18th century, in contrast structural imbalances in society were intense in the 19th century, and the people acutely longed for the qualitative change in society. Next, contrary to middle class persons to resist against status system or a classical scholar to withdraw into himself in underprivileged circumstances, Kim Yoon-Sik who was a young intellectual squarely faced social problems as a whole and had the critical mind to solve fundamentally them. To describe a leading character to solve drastically structural imbalances in society and to seek the qualitative change in society, Kim Yoon-Sik described Kwon Ok transforming narratively existing chivalrous persons.
