이글은 2016-2017년에 이루어진 한국 근현대사 연구의 성과를 review한 것이다. 먼저 2년 동안 생산된 연구들의 주요한 특징이나 경향을 몇 개의 항목으로 나누어 살펴보았으며, 각 항목별 연구들이 가진 의미와 문제들을 지적하였다. 우선 전체적으로 연구 성과들이 양적으로 성장하였고, 연구 분야 면에서도 한층 다양해지고 있음을 알 수 있다. 그러나 이러한 연구의 양적 팽창과 연구 분야의 다양화가 반드시 연구의 질적 성장으로 연결되는 것은 아니라는 평가가 많다. 또 새로운 시각이나 방법론에 입각한 연구 성과들도 이전에 비해 많아지고 있다. 이러한 연구들은 한국사 연구의 시야를 확장하고 진전시켜 나가는 데 적지 않은 기여를 하고 있다. 그러나 새로운 이론이나 방법론은 서구에서 만들어진 것이 대부분이다. 따라서 그것을 수용할 때도 그 이론이나 방법론이 어떤 배경이나 목적에서 만들어진 것인지, 그것이 결과적으로 어떤 역사상을 구성하는 것인지 등에 대한 고민이 필요하다. 한국사 연구의 질적 수준은 높이기 위해서는 비교사적 접근이 필요하다. 무엇보다 비교사적 접근은 일국사적 관점에서는 미처 생각하지 못했던 새로운 분석방법이나 시야를 열어가는 계기가 될 수도 있기 때문이다. 다만 비교사가 긍정적인 의미를 지니기 위해서는 중요한 전제가 있다. 그것은 비교 대상 간의 대칭성과 발전론적 목적론적 역사인식의 극복이다.
This article reviewed the achievement of studies on modern Korean history from 2016 to 2017. First it looked on the major characteristics or trends of the researches done for the two years by categories, and then pointed out what each category of researches signifies and matters. To begin with, the achievement grew in quantity and the scope of studies became broader. However, many say that this quantitative growth and diversification do not necessarily connect to the qualitative growth of researches. Also, the achievement of researches based on new perspectives or methodologies is increasing. Such studies contribute to expanding and advancing the visual range of studies on Korean history. But new theories and methodologies are mostly developed in the West. Therefore, considering on what the background or purpose the theory or methodology has developed and what kind of historic shapes it constitutes consequently is needed. Approach in the aspect of comparative history is necessary in order to develop the quality of studies on Korean history, since it can be a trigger to a new method of analysis or perspective that could not be thought of otherwise. Still there exist important preconditions for the comparative history to have a positive meaning; one is the symmetry between the subjects to compare, the other is overcoming the teleological historical view and theory of historical development.
