남구만의 『약천집』 「시」(권1과 권2)는 초고에 있던 900여수의 시 중에서 약 1/3인 276수만 선별되어 수록된 것이다. 따라서 그 편집과정에는 편집자의 특별한 편집의도나 편집성향이 적잖게 개입되었을 것이다. 본고는 남구만의 교유인물을 살펴보고 그 인물과 관련된 시가 『약천집』 「시」에 선별되어 편차될 수 있었던 이유가 무엇일지 유추해 봄으로써 그 편집성향을 고찰한 글이다. 남구만은 효종․현종․숙종 삼조에 걸쳐 활동한 대신으로, 요직을 두루 거쳐 영의정에까지 올랐으며 83세까지 장수한 인물이라는 사실을 염두에 두면 그와 교유를 나누었던 인물은 헤아리기 힘들만큼 많을 것이다. 그래서 필자는 우선 그 범위를 『약천집』 「시」로 제한하여 남구만이 누군가에게 준 시나 누군가를 추억하며 지은 시를 대상으로 하여 그 교유인물을 前輩(연장자)와 同輩(동년배) 위주로 정리하여 제시하고, 남구만의 글을 통해 남구만과 그들의 실질적인 交分 정도를 중점적으로 살펴보았다. 前輩의 경우는 남구만이 스승으로 모셨거나 평소 인품을 존경해 온 인물(송준길․이경석․조윤석 등) 그리고 紀群之交를 맺어온 인물(정두경․김시진․최후량 등)들 위주로 선별된 것으로 보인다. 그리고 同輩의 경우는 벼슬을 하기 전부터 사귀어오며 지위나 정치적 입장 따위는 신경 쓰지 않아도 되는 정도의 知友나 布衣之交(이민적․이민서․이준 등) 그리고 관직에 있으면서 친해진 동료(이훤․박태상․여성제 등)나 연행이나 유배와 같은 특정 상황에서 친밀해진 인물(이세화․이화진 등) 위주로 선별된 것으로 보인다. 남구만은 서인계열의 문인이며, 특히 서인이 노론과 소론으로 분기되면서 소론의 영수로 지목된 만큼 『약천집』 「시」를 통해 확인해 볼 수 있는 교유인물도 자연스레 서인계열과 소론계열의 인물들이 주를 이루고 있기는 하다. 하지만 그것은 정치적 계열이나 당파가 우선시되어 선별된 결과라기보다는 그 인물과의 交分과 情誼에 초점이 맞춰져 선별된 결과로 보아야 한다. 이는 『약천집』에는 시 말고도 그 인물들과의 교분을 확인할 수 있는 글(묘도문자, 서신 등) 역시 수록되어 있는 경우가 많다는 데서도 그러함을 알 수 있다. 따라서 『약천집』 「시」는 정치적 색채보다는 남구만과 실제로 교분이 깊었던 인물들과 관련한 시를 우선적으로 선별하였다는 편집성향을 보인다.
This study considers editing tendencies by examining those with whom Nam Gu-man associated and postulating the reasons poems about those individuals were selected and compiled in 「Poetry」 (Vol. 1 & 2) of 『Yakcheon-jip』. This author first limits the range of research as 「Poetry」 in 『Yakcheon-jip』 and examines poems that Nam Gu-man wrote to give to another person or to remember someone. The people are categorized here into those who were older and those who are contemporary. This categorization seems to reveal the editing tendencies of 「Poetry」 in 『Yakcheon-jip』 nicely. With regard to those who were older, it seems that he selected individuals who were his masters or individuals he respected (Song Jun-gil․Lee Gyeong-seok․Jo Yun-seok, etc.) and with whom he associated over the course of several decades (Jeong Du-gyeong․Kim Si-jin․Choi Hu-ryang, etc.). Also, regarding his contemporaries, it seems that he selected very close friends whose status or political position he did not care about as they had always been his friends, even before he became involved in public service (Lee Min-jeok․Lee Min-seo․Lee Jun, etc.), colleagues he befriended while he was in government service (Lee Hwon․Pak Tae-sang․Yeo Seong-je, etc.), and those with whom he became intimate in particular situations, for example, through travel or while in exile (Lee Seo-hwa․Lee Hwa-jin, etc.). Nam Gu-man was a Seoin-line literary person. Particularly after Seoin was divided into Noron and Soron, he was designated as the head of Soron. That is why the individuals found in 「Poetry」 of 『Yakcheon-jip』, too, were from the Seoin or Soron lineages. However, in examining his 「Poetry」 in 『Yakcheon- jip』 overall, we can see that the editor was trying to select works for those individuals who were actually very close with Nam Gu-man, while revealing his political orientation as little as possible. This is the very editing tendencies we can find in 「Poetry」 of 『Yakcheon-jip』.
