Book Review of Linguistic Ethnography of Korean: Chungcheongnambuk-do

이 글은 ≪한국의 언어 민속지: 충청남북도 편≫(왕한석, 2016)에 대한 서평이다. 이 책은 충남의 홍성과 충북 청원 지역의 언어와 문화(language and culture)를 민족지적으로 기술(ethnographic description)하였다. 이 책은 크게 세 영역, 즉 언어와 문화적 인지와 관련된 민족언어학(ethnolinguistics) 영역, 언어와 사회조직과 관련된 사회언어학(sociolinguistics) 특히 의사소통의 민족지학(ethnography of communication)의 영역, 그리고 언어 예술(verbal art) 및 놀이와 관련된 민속학(folklore) 영역에 대한 내용으로 이루어져 있다. 이 세 영역에 대한 구체적인 내용은 지명, 생태 환경의 어휘적 구분Ⅰ, Ⅱ, 친척용어 체계, 호칭 체계, 존댓말의 체계, 말의 주요 범주와 특수한 상황 변이어, 언어 예술로 되어 있다. 이 책의 기술 태도는 언어 사용 규칙을 체계화하려 한 국어학이나 국어 방언학의 그것과(연구 방법과) 대비된다. 국어학 연구에서는 언어 공동체(speech community)에서 발견되는 주제를 심층적으로 분석하고 기술하는 태도를 취해 왔다는 점에서 이 책은 한국어 연구에서 한국어 방언 자료를 수집하고 분석하는 사회언어학적 실재(sociolinguistic reality)를 얼마나 충실하게 반영했는가에 대하여 생각해 보는 계기가 되었다. ≪한국의 언어 민속지: 충청남북도 편≫는 민족언어학 영역, 의사소통의 민족지학 영역, 민속학 영역에서 사라져 가는 무형의 언어 민속 자료를 체계적이고 심층적으로 조사 연구했다는 점에서 중요한 가치가 있다.

This paper reviews the book Linguistic Ethnography of Korean: Chung- cheong-nam-do, which is written by Wang, Hanseok (2016). In his book, Wang (2016) ethnographically describe the language and culture of Hong-seong of Chung-nam province and Cheong-won of Chung-buk province. The book consists of three parts: ethnolinguistics that related to language and cultural recognition, sociolinguistics especially about ethnography of communication, and verbal art and folklore that associated with playing. These three parts includes names of places, vocabulary classification for the ecologyⅠ, Ⅱ, system of kinfolk term, system of address, system of honorifics, category of words and variation for the special conditions, and language arts etc. The method of study in this book shows contrast with the method of Korean linguistics and Korean dialectology, which attempts to systemize the rules of Korean language use. The study of Korean linguistics analyzes in depth and describes topics that were found in speech community. This method, however, lacks true reflection of sociolinguistic reality that can be obtained by collecting and analyzing the research materials of Korean dialects. In respects that disappearing linguistic folk materials are systematically investigated and studied in depth in three different perspectives, ethnolinguistic point of view, ethnography of communication, and ethnology, the book Linguistic Ethnography of Korean: Chungcheongnambuk-do deserve to be well appreciated.
