고등학교 “윤리와 사상” 교과서에서 ‘이황의 사단칠정 선악관’은 매우 중요하게 다루어지고 있다. 그래서 그동안 수학능력시험에서도 여러 번 출제되었다. 그러나 관련된 교과서 내용은 그 중요성만큼 정확하지 않은 것이 현실이다. 2018년 “윤리와 사상” 교과서는 5종류이다. 이황의 ‘칠정의 선악관’에 대해 이 중 두 교과서는 다른 세 교과서보다는 상대적으로 내용의 정확도가 높지만 나머지 세 교과서는 이황의 입장과는 다른 내용이 서술되어 있어 시급히 수정이 요청된다. 일부 교과서에는 이황이 자신의 입장이 잘못되었음을 시인하고 수정하였음에도 불구하고 수정하기 전의 견해가 실려 있기도 하였다. 이황의 ‘사단 선악관’도 마찬가지다. 이황의 사단칠정관을 대표하는 두 축인 ‘기대승과의 논변’과 이러한 논변의 성과가 반영되어 있는 “성학십도” 중 전자만 서술하고, 이후 저술된 후자의 주장이 누락된 교과서가 대부분이었다. 이황의 사상에 있어 “성학십도”의 중요성을 감안할 때 그 내용을 반영하여 교과서 내용을 수정하는 것이 필요하다.
Yi Hwang’s Theory of Four Beginnings and Seven Emotions has been dealt with importantly at the high school textbook of Ethics and Thoughts. The questions regarding the viewpoints of good and evil in Yi Hwang’s Theory of Four Beginnings and Seven Emotions have been taken many times at the government-sponsored College Scholastic Ability Test. In terms of the significance of the Neo-Confucian scholar’s thoughts on the issue, however, the actual contents of the idea are not explained as exactly as expected. There exist five different versions of Ethics and Thoughts textbooks printed for the 2018 academic year. Of the five, two present more precise contents compared with the three others. The three textbooks deal with the topics in a way different from the original positions of Yi Hwang, whose pen name is Toegye, and thus require immediate revisions. In some cases, the authors admitted their faults and revised the texts, but the printed textbooks didn’t reflect the changes. The same is true for Yi Hwang’s theory of good and evil in the thoughts of Four Beginnings. Most of the textbooks only introduced the famous “Four-Seven Debate” – which discussed the relationship between Mencius’s Four Beginnings (or four basic human feelings) and Seven Emotions – while ignoring The Ten Diagrams on Sage Learning (聖學十圖) where Toegye raised the level of his Confucian debate with Gi Daeseung to a new height of intellectual sophistication. The “Four-Seven Debate” and The Ten Diagrams on Sage Learning are two of the cardinal pillars of Yi Hwang’s Theory of Four Beginnings and Seven Emotions.
