지금까지 학계에서는 일반적으로 노계 박인로의 사회적 위상과 개인적 상황에 해 ‘ ’으로 표현해왔다. 그런데 근년에 와서 그와는 전혀 다른 견해를 제출한 학자들이 나타나기 시작했다. 노계는 영천 지역의 표적인 인 의 일원으로서 중소지주층의 ‘유력한 ’이었으며, 그러한 사회적 위상에 걸맞은 역할을 수행하면서 당당하게 행세했던 인물이라는 것이 바로 그것 이다. 하지만 노계가 영천지역에서 행세하던 유력한 재지사족이었다는 견해에 해서는 여러모로 동의하기 어려운 점이 있으며, 그 이유는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 노계의 작품들 가운데는 다른 사람의 ‘명령’으로 지은 작품이 유난히도 많은데, 그 가운데는 나이가 20-30세 어린 의 아들들의 ‘명령’을 받고 지은 과 도 포함되어 있다. 노계가 만약 당당하고 유력한 사족이었다 면, 이덕형의 아들들이 아버지와 친하게 지냈던 노계에게 이러한 가사를 지으라 고 ‘명령’을 내릴 수는 없었을 것이다. 둘째, 노계는 와 의 문인임이 분명하고, 에게 배웠다는 기록 도 있다. 하지만 정구, 장현광, 조호익의 제자들의 이름을 기록한 명부인 에 한결같이 노계의 이름이 보이지 않는다. 이처럼 노계의 이름이 나올 법한 곳에 모 두 빠져 있는 것을 보면, 그가 어떤 이유로 들로부터 소외를 당하고 있었던 것이 아닌가 하는 생각이 든다. 셋째, 이 지은 를 보면 그가 경작지와 보배로운 채찍을 남에게 빼앗겼다는 일화가 기록되어 있다. 이러한 일화들을 보면 노계는 당당하 고 유력한 재지 사족이 아니라 사회적 약자였다는 느낌을 가지게 한다. 넷째, 각종 양박씨 족보에 의하면 노계의 큰아버지 이 아들이 없어서 7 촌 조카 을 양자로 맞았는데, 친조카인 노계 3형제가 있음에도 불구하고 핏 줄이 먼 친척을 양자로 맞은 이유가 궁금하다. 아울러 20세기 이전에 간행된 의 들에 노계의 이름이 거듭 누락되어 있는 것을 보면, 노계 집안의 사회적 위상이 유력한 사족은 아니었을 것으로 판단된다. 다섯째, 현재 건너편 야산에 있는 노계의 아버지와 노계 및 노계 형 제들의 묘소가 한 지역에서 행세했던 유력한 의 묘소라고 생각하기 어려울 정도로 소박하고 조촐하다. 노계 집안의 묘소가 이처럼 소박하고 조촐한 것은 그 당시 노계 집안의 사회적 위상을 반영하는 것이 아닐까 싶다. 이와 같은 사실을 종합해 볼 때, 노계가 당당하게 행세했던 유력한 이었다는 견해는 의 여지가 있다고 본다. 오히려 그는 어떤 근원적인 결함으 로 인하여 사회로부터 소외를 당하고 있었던 것이 아닐까 싶다. 만약 필자의 견해 가 타당하다면, 지금까지 학계에 보고된 논문들 가운데서도 재검토되어야할 사항 들이 상당히 많을 것으로 생각하며, 앞으로 노계의 생애와 문학을 연구하는 데도 이 글이 적지 않게 참고가 되리라 기된다.

The academic sector generally expressed Nogye's social status as ‘a fallen rural noble class.’ Recently, however, there have been scholars who have presented completely different opinion. They argue that Nogye was from a wealthy and powerful noble family that represented the Bak Family of Miryang, the most noted family of Yeongcheon and lived a confident life doing what was appropriate for his social class. However, the following are the reasons why it is hard to agree with their opinion: First, there are noticeably many pieces of Nogye that were written by others' 'orders' including Sangsagok and Gwonjuga that were written by the 'orders' of the sons of Yi Duk Hyung who were only between 20 and 30 years of age. If Nogye were a powerful nobleman, it wouldn't have been possible for the sons of Yi Duk Hyung to 'order' Nogye who was close to their father to write the songs. Second, it is clear that Nogye was a literary man of Jung Goo and Hyun Gwang Jang and it is recorded that he learned from Jo Ho Ik. However, Nogye is not mentioned in the list of names of pupils of Jung Goo, Hyun Gwang Jang, and Jo Ho Ik. Considering that his name is missing from all records related to him, we can assume that he may have been alienated from the noble families for some reason. Third, Nogye's autobiography records that he once lost his farm and treasured whip to someone else. This anecdote tells us that Nogye was not a powerful nobleman, but a social weak Fourth, the family records of the Bak Family of Miryang shows that Nogye's uncle, Bak Rin, adopted his far nephew, Bak Sa Shin, and it is wondered why he adopted a far relative when Nogye's three brothers were his closer nephews. Also, Nogye's name is missing in the older family records of the Bak Family of Miryang several times, so we can assume that Nogye was not from a powerful noble family. Fifth, the tombs of Nogye's father, Nogye, and his brothers on the hill across from Dogye Seowon are very poorly set and managed. The appearance of his family graveyard must reflect the social status of his family. Considering the above findings, it shall be reconsidered that Nogye was from a confident and powerful noble family. If my opinion is valid, many of the theses reported to the academic sector shall be reconsidered and my study would be helpful for further studies on Nogye.
